Michael Hussey makes a telling contribution in his final international Test appearance as Australia beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in Sydney to complete a series whitewash over the tourists.

Australia have beaten Sri Lanka by five wickets in the third Test in Sydney to complete a series whitewash over the tourists.

Dinesh Chandimal made an unbeaten 62 in the morning on day four, but wickets fell consistently around him as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 278 in their second innings.

That set Australia an extremely modest victory target of 141, however the hosts began their chase poorly when David Warner was dismissed for a golden duck.

The left-hander edged a Suranga Lakmal delivery straight to Mahela Jayawardene at second slip, leaving the Australians 0-1.

Phillip Hughes (34), Michael Clarke (29), Ed Cowan (36) and Matthew Wade (9) steadied the ship to get the Aussies within touching distance, before Mitchell Johnson (1*) and Michael Hussey (28*), who was playing in his last Test before retiring from international cricket, saw them home.

Johnson's winning run was scored off the 11th ball in the evening session, after the players had gone off for tea with Australia just five short of their target.
