Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat, amassing 320-99 thanks to a fine display at the crease by Upul Tharanga, who managed 92 runs from 179 balls.

Pakistan would edge in front after taking the bat, however, ending the morning session on 332-93. There was a century for Sarfraz Ahmed, who bettered his Sri Lanka counterpart with 103 runs in 127 balls.

Ahmed also starred for Pakistan on day two of the Test, hitting a half-century to keep his team in contention in the second Test match in Colombo.
