Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath calls time on limited-overs career

Sri Lanka veteran Rangana Herath announces his limited-overs international retirement in the hope of prolonging his Test career.

Sri Lanka bowler Rangana Herath has announced his retirement from limited-overs international cricket at the age of 38.

The left-armer has decided not to play in one-day internationals and Twenty20s in the hope of prolonging his Test career.

"Every cricketer has to stop at the right time," Herath told Sri Lanka Cricket's website.

"I feel it's time to make room for fresh talent to be groomed with the 2019 World Cup in view."

Herath finishes his limited-overs career with 74 wickets in 71 one-day internationals and 18 in 17 Twenty20s.

He is three wickets away from becoming the third Sri Lankan - after Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas - to reach the 300 mark in Tests.
