South Africa in control as Australia bowled out for 85

South Africa bowl out Australia for 85 before establishing a commanding lead on the first day of the second Test match in Hobart.

Five wickets from Vernon Philander have helped South Africa dominate Australia on the opening day of the second Test in Hobart.

After winning the toss, South Africa quickly reduced their hosts to 17-5 as Philander picked up three of his dismissals, and although Steven Smith remained resolute, he witnessed the rest of his team fall around him.

Other than Smith, who recorded an unbeaten 48, only Joe Mennie (10) reached double figures as Australia capitulated in front of their home crowd and it took just 148 minutes for South Africa to grab their final wicket.

A blistering spell from Mitchell Starc reduced South Africa to 46-3 but Hashim Amla put together 47 runs from 67 balls to take the tourists into the lead.

Temba Bavuma added a patient 38 to reach stumps unbeaten alongside Quinton de Kock, who added 28 off 40 balls to move South Africa to 171-5, giving them a lead of 86 runs after the first three sessions.
