Mark Ramprakash has said that the signing of Graeme Smith is a 'real statement of intent' by Surrey County Cricket Club.
South Africa's Test captain signed a three-year contract to play for the county side last week.
Ramprakash, who spent 12 years playing at The Oval, told BBC London 94.9: "It's a seriously bold statement by Surrey to get someone of the calibre of Graeme.
"He is a top batsman but his influence goes well beyond making runs. He is one who leads by example and has real mental strength.
"The fact he has signed for three years is a real statement of intent for him to come and shape the Surrey staff and playing members into something that is more long-lasting than a flash in the pan."
Smith has played in over 100 Tests and 141 first-class matches.
