Live Commentary: World Cup - South Africa vs. India - as it happened

Hello everyone! The World Cup continues at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today, and we've got a cracker on our hands as South Africa take on India in Pool B. Both sides won their opening games, and the winner will top the group today. I'll be here to give you over-by-over updates throughout the day.

India's preparations for the tournament were not ideal, but the defending champions produced an impressive display in the victory over Pakistan a week ago. Virat Kohli once again reminded us of his quality in this format. They key will be their bowling today. The seamers will be under more pressure to deliver today.

South Africa were pushed hard by Zimbabwe in their opening game before eventually recording a 62-run victory. Most of the credit for that win went to David Miller and JP Duminy, who put on a world-record partnership for the fifth wicket. In truth, it was probably a good thing to be tested early on in the tournament, and the Proteas head into this game in good nick.

INDIA WIN THE TOSS AND BAT FIRST: MS Dhoni edges the first battle in Melbourne, and his side will bat first for the second game running. A pitch that is unlikely to carry much pace should suit India's batsmen against South Africa's excellent pace attack.

South Africa's supporters will be outnumbered by the passionate Indian fans in Melbourne today, and Proteas bowling coach Allan Donald believes them could be key.

"It's a home game for India," said the former world number one bowler. "There is going to be a lot of Indian support, so keeping the crowd quiet is going to be a big thing."

Just one change to the South Africa side as they add to the strength of their seam attack with the inclusion of Wayne Parnell, who replaces Farhaan Behardien. India are unchanged.

As you may already know, one Pool B game is underway in Dunedin. Afghanistan were dismissed for 232 in the 50th over earlier today, but they've responded magnificently to reduce Sri Lanka to 54-4 midway through the 14th over. Angelo Mathews and Mahela Jayawardene are the players currently at the crease. Can Sri Lanka pull off a shock?

As always, the early overs could be crucial in the India innings. MS Dhoni's side have the power to score as quickly as anyone in the final 10, so putting pressure on the middle order will be key four South Africa. Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander in town, and they're a test for any batting order in the world.

The two sides are out on the field at the MCG for the national anthems. There's expected to be around 85,000 fans inside the ground for today's game. You won't be hearing much from the South Africans unless they get on top early.

Here we go then. Two of the biggest cricketing nations in the world, both confident following their opening wins, face off in Melbourne. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma open the batting for India. Steyn will bowl the first over.

Steyn immediately goes full to Sharma, who finds the middle of the bat with a couple of firm shots for no run. The seamer drifts wider late in the over, and he beats the outside edge to complete a maiden. Good start from Steyn.

Philander takes the new ball from the other end. If there's going to be swing, he'll be the one to find it. Miller does well at point to stop a powerful cut from Dhawan, who gets India off the mark by clipping four through square-leg off the fourth ball of the over. Keeping wickets in hand will be vital today. 300 should be the target. Dhawan finds a single to keep the strike.

Steyn is bowling with very good pace early in this spell. He's pushing the ball across Dhawan, who will be expecting the in-swinger at some point. However, he's allowed to free his arms outside off-stump as he cuts past backward point for four.

WICKET! SHARMA (0) RUN OUT (DE VILLIERS): Sharma departs to a wonderful piece of fielding. A firm drive from Dhawan is stopped at cover, and Sharma slips after thinking a single was on. De Villiers does the rest with a good pick up and superb throw. Big breakthrough for the Proteas! Kohli comes out as Dhawan keeps out the final two balls.

Philander produces a beauty early in his over to take the ball away from Kohli's outside edge. Two slips are waiting for the false shot from India's number three. Good work from Philander to keep the pressure on aftr the first wicket. Kohli was in superb form on the way to scoring 107 in the win over Pakistan. South Africa know they need to get him early.

Steyn is starting to find his rhythm out there now. Dhawan looks uncomfortable as he leans back to let a bouncer strike him on the glove, and it's unconvincing from the opener again when he pulls the ball just short of Parnell at square-leg. A full-toss allows the left-hander to pick up a single to cover. He'll keep the strike after Kohli swings wildly at the ball outside off-stump.

India pick up singles at the start of the over as Kohli gets off the mark with a nudge off the hip. Dhawan struggles to connect with the short ball once again but he gets the pull over the fielder at short fine-leg to collect two runs.

Kohli doesn't look too comfortable at the moment, but he's happy to deal in singles at the moment as he earns a run to third-man. Steyn goes too full to Dhawan and he picks up the length quick to hammer four runs through extra cover. Sachin Tendulkar is in the house and there's a huge cheer when the Indian legend is shown on the big screen.

Shot! Du Plessis is forced into a long chase, but he can't stop Kohli from reaching the rope with a drive on the up. Philander responds by drifting onto the pads and Kohli picks up a single to deep square-leg. The ICC cameraman is making the most of a Tendulkar sighting, but the cheers keep coming from the Indian fans. They miss seeing him out in the middle. In truth, I think we all do. Dhawan is looking in pretty good nick out in the middle as he drills Philander through the covers for another boundary. A risky single follows, but De Villiers is off target for once when takes aim from mid-off. Dhawan may have been in a spot of bother there. Dhawan 22* Kohli 7

Interesting move from De Villiers in the ninth over as Duminy comes on to bowl the first spin of the day. The off-spinner immediately hits the pad when Dhawan goes back, but it would have missed leg-stump. A single to long-off hands the strike to Kohli, who nudges a run to deep mid-wicket. There's a slip and a short mid-wicket catching, but neither are involved as India start pretty well against the spin. Three runs scored in Duminy's over.

Changes at both ends as Morne Morkel comes into the attack. He'll get a bit of extra bounce on this pitch, but the early signs suggest it's a good pitch to bat on, and that probably won't change much as the day progresses. Dhawan helps himself to four runs when he cuts a wide one over point. India have recovered well in the first powerplay following the loss of Sharma.

Duminy's spell lasts just one over as leg-spinner Imran Tahir is introduced by De Villiers. Kohli starts the over by sweeping straight to the fielder at short fine-leg, before pushing a single to long-off. No turn for Tahir, but he changes the pace up well. Dhawan is looking to use his feet as often as possible. That could be a good battle. Dhawan 28 Kohli 9*

Dhawan and Kohli are both looking comfortable out there. They've not needed to take many risks, but they're keeping the scoreboard ticking over. India will want wickets in hand for the latter stages of the innings. Kohli makes it eight from Morkel's over by whipping the ball through mid-wicket for four.

UPDATE: Sri Lanka are looking in control after being in trouble against Afghanistan earlier in their pursuit of 233. Mahela Jayawardene has passed 50 and they are currently 135-4 after 32 overs.

Tahir is a touch too full to Dhawan early in the over, but some excellent work from Du Plessis at short extra cover stops a certain boundary. Both Indians pick up singles down the ground before Steyn's mistake in the deep on the off-side allows Dhawan to collect two more.

Morkel has really struggled to find his line early in the spell, and the left-hand/right-hand combo doesn't seem to be helping the big man. It's more calm batting from India as they pick the gaps to collect three singles, but Morkel is almost close to sneaking one onto the stumps when he catches Dhawan's inside edge. The opener then spots the length well to score four through mid-on. Dhawan 38 (55) Kohli 18 (23)

It's all looking pretty easy early on. South Africa have started well, but these two have made good starts and they'll fancy their chances of delivering big scores from this position. A wicket would quickly change things. Five off the Tahir over.

A single hands the strike to Dhawan early in the over, and Morkel catches the glove with a fierce bouncer. Good bowling from the seamer, who ruins some decent work by watching a half-tracker get smashed over square-leg for four. Interesting move from Morkel. There's a bit of movement at the crease from Dhawan and Morkel refuses to deliver the ball. A miscued pull to fine-leg means Dhawan will keep the strike.

A bit of news has reached us during the drinks break. Philander has been off the field in recent overs, and he is believed to be battling with a tight hamstring. South Africa could struggle without him later in the innings.

Tahir has kept things pretty tight from one end, which will please De Villiers, who makes another superb stop at short extra cover. Kohli just manages to keep a quicker one out before cutting a single to deep cover. Tahir and De Kock look convinced that they have Dhawan caught down the leg-side, but they decide against reviewing. Good decision. No touch on bat or ball. Three off the over.

Parnell is into the attack for the first time. He needs a good performance to justify his selection. The seamer starts by beating the outside edge when Dhawan swings hard at one outside off-stump. Parnell drifts even wider to put an extra on the board. A thick edge allows Dhawan to get off strike and Kohli adds another run with a flick off the pad. 50! Dhawan reaches his half-century from 70 balls, and he does so in style with a powerful cut past point.

Duminy is back into the attack, and it's a decent return from the off-spinner as he concedes just two runs off his second over. South Africa need a wicket.

Drop! Amla is agonisingly close to taking a stunner at backward point. Dhawan attacks with the cut again, and he breathes a huge sigh of relief when the diving Amla puts one down. It was a very tough chance, but Amla probably fancied his chances after getting a hand on the ball. India pick up four from the over.

Half chance for South Africa. Duminy does well to stop a firm shot from Kohli, and he reacts well to attempt the run out at the non-striker's end, but Dhawan gets lucky as the ball misses the stumps by a couple of inches. The off-spinner is bowling very nicely so far. Dhawan 57* Kohli 28

Parnell has been too wide to Dhawan, who is forced to stretch to pick up a run to third-man. Kohli rotates the strike with a single through the same region. A no-ball later in the over gifts a free hit to India, but Parnell didn't seem to overstep. It's a strange one. Luckily for South Africa, Kohli picks out Miller, who takes the meaningless catch in the deep to restrict India to two runs. Eight off the over.

Duminy delivers a rare poor ball and Dhawan is in the right form to cash in as he rocks back to pull a short one away for four runs. India are building a very good platform for a late assault on the South African attack. Will De Villiers turn back to Steyn soon? Dhawan 65* Kohli 34

Shot! Superb from Dhawan. Parnell continues to struggle and the opener leans back to guide four runs over where the slips would have been placed. He follows that with a powerful stroke as he drills four more down the ground. A sharp bouncer almost catches Kohli out when India's number three plays a lazy hook without making contact. 11 more to the total.

De Villiers does turn to his strike bowler again as Steyn returns for a fifth over. Miller misses with a throw at the stumps, and the Indian duo respond brilliantly to sneak another run. Steyn gets the line wrong with the bounce and Dhawan pulls behind square for another boundary. He's put his foot down in the last few overs. India continue to run impressively, too. Steyn is left frustrated by another quick single off a needless throw at the stumps.

Tahir is back, but De Villiers is punished for not having a slip in for the leg-spinner as Dhawan edges one for four runs. Another good ball catches a thick edge. Tahir looks the most threatening, but India continue to make good progress.

Kohli comes down the pitch with nothing more than a push, but the timing is brilliant as he collects four past mid-on. Tahir does well on the rope at fine-leg to stop the same batsman from scoring another boundary. Steyn is struggling to build pressure. Dhawan 86 Kohli 46*

WICKET! KOHLI (46) C DU PLESSIS B TAHIR: South Africa get the breakthrough. Kohli is furious with himself as he rocks back to pull the ball straight to Du Plessis, who takes a smart catch at mid-wicket. It looked like a slightly quicker one from Tahir. Big wicket.

Ajinkya Rahane is the new batsman for India and he immediately gets off the mark. Two runs and a wicket from the Tahir over.

Morkel is back into the attack. This is a crucial period in the innings. If South Africa can pick up another couple of quick wickets the pressure will be on India again. India should be thinking 300 from this position. Decent return for Morkel with just three runs coming from the over.

Dhawan and Rahane need to be positive against Tahir, who has been the pick of the bowlers so far. Singles are on offer at this stage, and the Indian duo combine well to pick up four. Dhawan 92* Rahane 4

RESULT: Afghanistan put up an impressive fight, but it's Sri Lanka who have claimed a four-wicket win Dunedin. Jayawardene scored 100, while Thisara Perera finished on 47 off 26 balls to guide his team to the victory.

Morkel gets a crucial hand on the ball when Rahane attempts to sweep the returning Duminy for four runs. A well-timed cut to deep point brings Rahane two more, before Duminy sends one past the edge. The spinner drifts one out wider, and he beats the bat again as India's number four plays a loose drive. A reverse sweep for two makes it seven from the over. Dhawan 93* Rahane 10

Morkel seems to be improving with each passing over, and he troubles Dhawan with a bit of extra pace. Rahane has looked comfortable since his arrival at the crease. South Africa can't allow this partnership to grow. Three from the over. Philander is fielding in the deep, so it will be interesting to see if that hamstring bothers him when he comes back on to bowl.

Parnell is back into the attack for a new spell, but it starts poorly as he sends a wide down the leg-side. Dhawan edges closer to three figures with a clip off the hip for two, before picking up a single. Rahane then gets forward to push one into the covers, and he rocks back later in the over to pull four through mid-wicket. Poor from Parnell. Rahane piles on the misery by getting an edge to beat De Kock and Amla at slip. Four more. Dhawan 98* Rahane 20

Dhawan moves to 99 with a nudge off the thigh pad as Duminy returns for another spell. Rahane takes a quick single on the leg-side to hand the strike back to his partner. The nerves are clear when Dhawan calls for a suicide single before abandoning the run, and he almost gets himself into trouble again later in the over. Du Plessis fields well on three occasions at extra cover. The wait for a century goes on.

Too wide from Parnell at the start of the over and Rahane capitalises to fire four runs past point, and he picks up two more with a nudge to deep square-leg. 100! Dhawan gets the strike with one ball remaining, and he's celebrating moments later. A four through the covers brings up his hundred from 122 balls. 14 boundaries from the left-hander in a great knock. He'll be hoping to stay there for a bit longer. Dhawan 103* Rahane 28

It's all looking very easy for India once again as they calmly pick up 11 runs from the over at the start of the batting powerplay, with Rahane playing the pick of the shots when he lofts over extra cover for four before reaching the fine-leg boundary with a clip off the pad.

Lovely cricket from Dhawan as he uses the reverse sweep to pick up a single on Tahir's return to the attack, and Rahane quickly rotates the strike again. Shot! Tahir loses his length and Dhawan pulls four over the fielder at short fine-leg. India are on course for a very big score if they can fire in the final 10 overs. Nine runs scored from Tahir's over.

Steyn is back into the attack for the third over of the powerplay, and he starts with a beauty to beat Dhawan's outside edge. The opener then sneaks a single to the man at short third-man. Rahane then lives dangerously by playing and missing outside off-stump. Much better from Steyn.

Philander is off the field again, which is a big concern for the Proteas. The latter stages of this innings could be very difficult.

Morkel and Steyn look invigorated as the former returns to send a couple of balls past Rahane's edge. South Africa have to break this partnership. Shot! Rahane responds in superb fashion by lofting four runs straight down the ground. Another boundary follows when he backs away to drill four more through the covers. He's been fantastic since replacing Kohli in the middle.

Six! Incredible noise at the MCG as Dhawan picks the slower ball from Steyn to launch six over the long-oon boundary, and he keeps the pressure on the bowler by guiding four more to third-man when the South African pace man drops one short. India pick up 13 from Steyn. 10 overs left.

Dhawan has the power, but he's rotated the strike very well today, too. Six! He displays his excellent form once again by sending six more over the rope with a stunning shot off the legs. Morkel responds well to beat the outside edge, and he gets one through again when Dhawan tries a pull off a delivery which isn't short enough. 100 partnership is up for these two. Rahane then reaches his 50 with a single to fine-leg. India are in a great position. Dhawan 135 Rahane 50*

Six! Rahane strikes the boundary rope with a superb pull shot as Parnell goes for another boundary midway through his returning over. It's not been his day so far. A single hands the strike to Dhawan, who finds another run off the inside edge.

Tahir is back into the attack, and Dhawan continues to bat with confidence as he skips down the pitch to hit the ball to long-off for a single. Six! Rahane is doing his best to steal the show with another maximum, this time over long-on. De Kock does well to collect when Tahir sends down a wide. India still have Raina, Dhoni and Jadeja to come. It could be a frantic finish.

Rahane is on the attack again as he pulls a couple of runs to deep mid-wicket. Parnell responds with the bouncer, but it's correctly called a wide. Duminy does brilliantly in the deep on the off-side to prevent a boundary. However, Parnel overstepped and it's a free hit to Rahane, who can only earn a single off the extra delivery.

WICKET! DHAWAN (137) C AMLA B PARNELL: A superb knock finally comes to an end. Dhawan goes for another big hook, but he can only pick out the safe hands of Amla at fine-leg. It's been a brilliant effort from India's opener. 137 from 146 balls

Rahane adds one more, before new batsman Raina finishes Parnell's over by getting off the mark with four past point.

Rahane takes the single on offer at the start of Morkel's over. Raina then flirts with one outside off-stump. Drop! Substitute fielder Rilee Rossouw charges in from the deep to get two hands to a miscued pull from Raina, but he can't cling on. It would have been a stunning catch.

WICKET! RAINA (6) C ROSSOUW B MORKEL: No mistake from this occasion as he takes the catch when Raina attacks another short ball from Morkel. South Africa can build a bit of momentum with some late wickets here. India really should reach 300 after being given such a good platform by Dhawan. Dhoni is the new batsman who watches Rahane finishes the over with two runs.

Dhoni attacks from ball one to earn a single with a powerful drive. Excellent work from Steyn to deliver three dot balls with a fuller length. Six! What a response. Steyn stays full, but Rahane gets hold of one outside off-stump to launch the ball over long-off.

WICKET! RAHANE (79) LBW B STEYN: A superb innings is stopped by Steyn, who beats the swinging bat to get the lbw decision. These could be vital wickets for South Africa if they can keep it tight in the final four overs.

De Villiers decides to bring back Tahir for the 47th over. Dhoni rocks back early in the over to cut the second ball away for a couple of runs, before nudging a single into the leg-side. Ravindra Jadeja gets off the mark with a push to long-off. It's a good over from Tahir at this stage. He finishes with 1-48 from 10 overs. Good effort from the leg-spinner.

WICKET! JADEJA (2) RUN OUT (DE VILLIERS): What a fielder. Jadeja calls for a risky single to mid-off, and De Villiers responds with a superb piece of fielding for his second run out of the day. Take a bow, AB.

Dhoni swivels on the crease to pick up the length superbly and pull the ball behind square for four runs, and he finds the rope again with a powerful stroke down the ground when Parnell delivers a full-toss. Awful from Parnell. He sends down the half-tracker and Dhoni rocks back to pull for another boundary. The pressure is on, and Parnell is struggling. A wide extends the over but Dhoni can't add another run.

Ashwin guides his first ball down to third-man to get the captain on strike. Morkel cramps Dhoni for room to restrict him to a single on the leg-side. Ashwin backs away but fails to make contact with a hopeful swing of the bat. A full-toss is heaved into the leg-side for three as India bring up 300 to the delight of the fans in blue at the MCG.

WICKET! DHONI C DE KOCK B MORKEL: Good bowling from Morkel, who surprises Dhoni with a sharp bouncer to catch the edge and De Kock takes a fine catch above his head. Shami misses outside off-stump on his arrival at the creSix balls left in the innings.

Excellent start to the final over as he concedes just one from the first two balls thanks to a couple of yorkers. Shami adds some priceless runs by heaving four to the rope behind square on the leg-side. He attempts to make room at the crease, but Steyn drifts two deliveries wider to beat the bat. Steyn ends the innings with three dot balls. Superb bowling.

SOUTH AFRICA NEED 308 TO WIN: Dhawan and Rahane stole the show with the bat, and India have set a very challenging total. However, South Africa will be very happy with how they finished the innings with the ball. It looked like India would reach 330 at one stage, but the Proteas will have to play very well to pick up the win today.

We'll take a quick break between the innings, but make sure you return in around 25 minutes to see how Amla, De Villiers and the rest of the South African lineup approach the run chase.

We could be in for a thrilling run chase. Amla, De Villiers, Du Plessis - South Africa certainly have the quality to chase down this target, but it would be a new record at the MCG. A good start is imperative. Will the Proteas risk attacking early on to get ahead of the required run-rate?

Here we go then. The target is 308. They will need to score at 6.16 runs an over. De Kock and Amla to open. Umesh Yadav will bowl the first over.

Amla averages just under a 56 in ODI cricket. 56! What a player. South Africa will be hoping he can deliver the goods today as he gets off the mark with a single from the first ball. De Kock usually only plays one way, and he attacks his first delivery to top edge the ball over the slips for four. That was brave. He didn't have any control over the shot. Yadav is bowling with good pace, but he sends one too wide, and the umpire adds an extra to the total.

There's some swing for Shami as he begins with a full delivery to Amla. A bouncer is called a wide when Dhoni struggles to stop the ball flying over his head. Amla picks up one down to third-man with a thick outside edge before De Kock adds another run with a miscued shot into the leg-side. Decent start for Shami. Amla 2 De Kock 5*

Great work from Sharma at cover to stop a firm push from De Kock, who looks a bit more composed following that frantic start to the innings. A punch into the off-side brings the wicketkeeper-batsman a couple, and he gets to the non-striker's end a ball later when Yadav strikes him in the hip. Ouch. Good pace from Yadav, who then beats the bat when Amla attempts to pull.

WICKET! DE KOCK (7) C KOHLI B SHAMI: De Kock has looked a bit nervy at the crease, and he delights the majority of the MCG by chipping Shami straight to Kohli at mid-off. It's a really poor way to get out, but India won't mind.

Du Plessis is the new batsman, and he wisely leaves the first ball alone when Shami finds some movement outside off-stump. India are full of confidence and there's a bit of buzz in the field. They'll look to feed off the energy in the crowd. Wicket maiden from Shami.

(TARGET 308) Amla shows good timing with a clip off the thigh, but Shami sprints around from fine-leg to stop the boundary with his foot. Du Plessis is more than happy to have a look at Yadav, and he starts his scoring with a single to third-man. South Africa won't want to get in trouble early on. They need to build the platform. Yadav concedes five off his over.

Shami strikes the glove with one that gets up off a length, but luckily for Amla, the ball lands safely behind square on the leg-side. Good cricket from Du Plessis to find a single with a push to Kohli at extra cover. India keeping it tight early on.

Mohit Sharma is into the attack. It's important for him to back up the good work of Shami and Yadav. Du Plessis walks out of his crease to block, and Mohit, who thinks a run out is on, strikes the batsman on the ankle with the throw. A quick apology, and Du Plessis shrugs it off. Amla is handed the strike and he finds a couple of runs with a punch through mid-wicket. Close! Mohit is left frustrated as an edge races past Dhoni and to the rope for four. India pay the price for taking out first slip.

Du Plessis has curbed his attacking instincts so far, but he's looked solid so far as he picks up a single behind square on the leg-side. Amla chips one just short of Rahane at square-leg to frustrate Shami, and the opener picks up a run with a nudge to extra cover. Shami then finishes with a beauty to beat the edge when Du Plessis skips down the pitch. India were just one run better off at this stage of their innings.

Amla continues to look like the calmest cricketer in the world as he clips a couple to deep mid-wicket before keeping out some very good bowling from Mohit. India then miss a huge chance to remove Amla! A risky single is called to Rahane, who makes a stunning stop at cover. Amla is left stranded as Rahane just misses. Raina is there to collect the throw but he somehow manages to miss the stumps from a yard away. Incredible. That could have been a big moment.

(TARGET 308) Could India end up regretting that missed chance? Raina simply had to hit the stumps from that far away. Amla doesn't make too any mistakes, so he will be in the mood to punish India. Shami continues to bowl with good pace as South Africa collect eight from the 10th over, with Amla latching onto a short ball to pull to the mid-wicket boundary.

Mohit starts the over with a wide before Du Plessis mistimes a pull shot into the leg-side for a single.

WICKET! AMLA (22) C SHAMI B MOHIT: Amla doesn't make too many mistakes, but he departs to send the Indian supporters wild. Mohit attacks with a sharp bouncer and Amla can only pick out Shami, who is the coolest man on the ground as he takes a high catch on the rope. Big wicket for India.

You lose Amla and bring out De Villiers. Not a bad replacement for South Africa, but they are on the back foot after that second wicket. India turn to spin for the first time as Jadeja comes into the attack. South Africa need to be positive against the slower bowlers in the middle overs. Du Plessis takes an early single, and Jadeja decides to bowl a bit wider to De Villiers, who finds a good connection at the third attempt to find a run of his own. South Africa collect four off the over.

Great work from Raina at mid-wicket to stop a couple of firm pulls from De Villiers when Mohit starts with some short stuff in his fourth over. A thick inside edge allows the Proteas skipper to get off strike. Du Plessis moves to 11 from 24 balls with a nudge off the hip for one.

Jadeja thinks he has trapped Du Plessis when the South African number three drops to one knee, but he got outside the line, so it's a good decision from the umpire. India's left-arm spinner puts pressure on batsmen with how quickly he gets through his overs. Another six balls race by with just three runs added.

(TARGET 308) Du Plessis shuffles across the crease to work Mohit into the leg-side for one. De Villiers is looking to be positive, as always, but he's picked out a lot of fielders early in his innings. That run comes to an emphatic end when a pull shot sends the ball racing to the mid-wicket boundary. Jadeja mixes his pace up nicely throughout out the over to keep both players guessing at the crease, but it's a comfortable six balls for the South African duo. Two added to the total.

Yadav is back for a new spell as Dhoni goes in search of what would be a key wicket if they break this partnership in the next few overs. Shot! Du Plessis charges forward to club the ball down the ground for four runs. A top edge hands Du Plessis four more at the end of the over as the ball sails over Dhoni's head. 11 from Yadav's return.

Jadeja is doing a very good job for India at the moment. He's reached four overs and conceded just 14 runs. That has allowed Dhoni to delay bringing on Ashwin, who might have a big say in the middle of the innings.

Yadav is hurrying De Villiers at the crease with his extra pace, and the Proteas captain is unable to free his arms early in the over. He relieves some pressure with a run down to third-man, and Du Plessis infuriates Yadav by charging forward to send a top edge to the rope for four.

(TARGET 308) The required run-rate has crept up to 7.29 runs an over as De Villiers and Du Plessis combine to collect four singles, before the former drops to one knee to sweep Jadeja to the mid-wicket boundary. Are South Africa planning an attack with these two?

Gasps from the Indian fans as Dhawan misses with the throw when Du Plessis sneaks a single to square-leg. A flick from Dhoni hits the stumps following a throw from the deep, but De Villiers is quick enough to get home for a couple of runs. Another single arrives with a drive to deep cover. These two are looking very comfortable out there now as Du Plessis steals the strike with a single to third-man.

Ashwin is into the attack for the first time. Du Plessis looks to be positive straight away as he rushes a couple after a nudge into the leg-side. There's almost a mix-up when Du Plessis opens the face of the bat, but De Villiers calls off the run just in time. Shot! Too short and wide from Ashwin, and Du Plessis latches onto the length quickly to cut four over the covers. An attempt at a similar shot follows later in the over, and Ashwin can't believe his luck when an outside edge races away for four. 10 off the spinner's first over.

WICKET! DE VILLIERS (30) RUN OUT (DHONI): Huge moment in this game! De Villiers thinks two runs are possible when he cuts Jadeja to deep point, but the throw could not be better from Mohit. Dhoni quickly whips the bails off with De Villiers short of his ground. It's such an important wicket for India. South Africa needed their skipper to be there for most of the innings. The pressure is on David Miller, who comes in at number five to keep out Jadeja. One run and a wicket from the over.

Du Plessis finds a single to long-on to get off strike at the start of a new over. India's supporters are still celebrating the De Villiers wicket, and you can't blame them. Miller, who scored a century in the win over Zimbabwe, drops to one knee to get off the mark with a sweep for one. Du Plessis rotates the strike again, before an inside edge hands Miller another run. South Africa end up taking five from the Ashwin over.

Du Plessis gets the strike early in the Ashwin over, and there's an appeal for a catch when Ashwin finds some big turn. Dhoni races forward to take the catch, but the deflection was off the pad. A couple of singles are followed by a Miller sweep, but Yadav manages to prevent the boundary. 50! Du Plessis reaches his half-century from 65 balls. Decent knock so far, but the Proteas need him to go on to make a big score in this chase.

There's a fielder in the deep at mid-wicket, but he's got not chance of stopping a superb sweep shot from Miller, who picks up four. He's a big threat to India. If he gets in, he'll score very quickly. South Africa collect 10 from Jadeja's over without taking a risk. Good batting.

Mohit strikes with the first ball on his return to the attack as Du Plessis gives himself room to miscue a shot straight to Dhawan, who takes the easiest of catches at mid-off. South Africa are in trouble now. Du Plessis needed to convert that start into a big hundred. Can Miller and Duminy save the Proteas?

South Africa have their two left-handers at the crease again just a week after their match-winning partnership against Zimbabwe. India are full of confidence now, and Dhoni responds by greeting Duminy with a slip. Mohit hits the perfect line and length to the new batsman. A wide is the only negative from a superb over. Excellent work by Mohit.

(TARGET 308) Miller's good form is clear as he drops to one knee to sweep for four through square-leg. Singles are on offer on either side of the wicket as South Africa pick up eight from an Ashwin over. Better from the Proteas. If they're going to win this match, these two will need to do most of the work.

The required run-rate has quickly moved up to 8.3 runs an over. Duminy and Miller exchange singles at the start of a new over, but Mohit is still bowling some excellent stuff to keep the pressure on. Shami does very well on the rope to stop a boundary when Duminy opens the face of the bat to execute a clever a shot past slip. Raina stops the next one in the same position, but he can't keep Duminy from picking up another run.

Ashwin is starting to find some turn and bounce as Duminy watches one strike him on the inside of the thigh before hitting Dhoni's helmet.

WICKET! DUMINY (6) C RAINA B ASHWIN: South Africa are in an even bigger hole now as Aswhin finds some more extra bounce to catch the edge when Duminy reverse sweeps, and the ball loops up to give Raina an easy catch at slip. The Proteas need a special performance from here.

It's Parnell rather than Philander who comes in at seven as the latter continues to deal with his hamstring problem on the sideline. Parnell will keep the strike after taking a single off the final ball of Ashwin's excellent over.

Smart captaincy from Dhoni as he brings back Shami with South Africa on the ropes. South Africa are living very dangerously now. A mix-up almost results in a run-out, but Miller's dive saves him after a risky call for two from Parnell. Shami looks full of confidence as he beats Parnell with a wider one when the left-hander attempts a wild pull shot. A single off the final ball makes it three from the over.

Ashwin gets one to straighten, and there's a big lbw appeal rejected. It looked like a good shout, but the decision would have stayed with the umpire as the ball would have only clipped leg-stump.

WICKET! MILLER (22) RUN OUT (YADAV): They've done it again. Miller calls for a risky two and the throw from Yadav is superb. Dhoni just flicks the ball not the stumps and Miller is out by just a few inches. It's been brilliant from India in the field today.

WICKET! PHILANDER (0) LBW B ASHWIN: It's all falling apart for South Africa. Richard Kettleborough wasn't sure, but he eventually decides to raise the finger when Ashwin hits Philander's pad. The decision goes to India on review. Philander thought it was high, but Hawkeye shows the ball would have clipped the top of the stumps. India are closing in on an emphatic win.

Dale Steyn walks out to the middle as the party continues in the stands for the Indian supporters. Parnell hands the strike to his new partner with a single behind square on the leg-side as Raina comes into the attack. The spinner is slightly too full as Steyn earns a run to deep square-leg. Parnell adds another to keep the strike. South Africa must now take the batting powerplay.

Ashwin's change of pace is making life difficult for Parnell, who is fortunate to get an inside edge on a quicker ball before rushing a single to mid-on. Steyn settles for blocking out the final two balls.

Shami is back into the attack for his seventh over. Parnell is quick to get off strike with a single off the first ball.

WICKET! STEYN (1) C DHAWAN B SHAMI: Shami strikes again! Steyn gives himself some room, but he can only pick out Dhawan at point with his cut. It's an easy catch for India's hero from earlier in the day.

Shami immediately tests Morkel with a good bouncer, but the new batsman gets off the mark with a single to fine-leg. Two more runs follow as India move another step closer to victory.

WICKET! MORKEL (2) B ASHWIN: Morkel brings out the slog sweep, but he's not even close to connecting as Ashwin hits leg stump to pick up his third wicket.

Tahir is more than happy to get off strike with a push into the covers, and Parnell is unable to find another run in the 38th over. Shami to finish it?

Tahir opens the face to steer three runs to deep cover at the start of the over, and Parnell then hits one of the shots of the day with a stunning pull for four. Another pull follows, this time for a single.

Parnell takes a risk by lofting the ball just wide of the fielder at cover for a single. Ashwin, in his final over, drifts a couple out wide to get Tahir coming forward. A thick outside edge hands South Africa's number 11 four runs as Ashwin finishes with figures of 3-41 from his 10.

Jadeja returns with a wide, and Parnell then gets off strike with a single to long-off.

WICKET! TAHIR (8) LBW B JADEJA: What a performance. Jadeja traps Tahir lbw to wrap up the victory for India. It's an emphatic triumph. The defending champions are finding their form. That's two in two for Dhoni's men. INDIA WIN BY 130 RUNS!

South Africa will surely recover from this win, but all credit must go to India, who dominated with both bat and ball. They're in control of Pool B after two games. Dhawan, Rahane, Ashwin and the rest of the bowlers put in impressive displays to secure the win in front of over 86,000 people at the MCG.
