Pakistan have taken a stronghold of the third and final Test against New Zealand in Sharjah by reaching the end of day one on 281-3.

Mohammad Hafeez dominated the attack by frustrating the Black Caps' bowlers with an unbeaten 178.

The 34-year-old, who opened the batting after Pakistan won the toss, ended the day recording three sixes and 23 boundaries off 262 deliveries.

Shan Masood (12) was the first to fall after getting bowled out by Mark Craig, while Azhar Ali (39) and Younis Khan (5) were also sent packing before tea.

New Zealand struggled to gain any momentum in the evening session as Hafeez remained stubborn at the crease, while Misbah-ul-Haq also impressed by reaching 38 not out by stumps.

Pakistan have a 1-0 lead in the series.
