Mitchell Starc fell one short of a maiden Test century as Australia were bowled out for 408 just before lunch against India.
Australia began day three on 273-7, but they soon progressed past 300 as Starc and Steven Smith looked comfortable in advancing their team's total.
The duo had looked to be heading towards a 100-run partnership, but they fell three short when Smith was dismissed by Pragyan Ojha for 92.
That set the stage for Starc to edge closer to his hundred, and it appeared as though the Australia number nine was going to claim the rare feat for a lower-order player.
However, Ishant Sharma struck to deny Starc the milestone, and the innings was soon wrapped up when Xavier Doherty was out for five.
India reached 3-0 off their solitary over just before lunch.
