Adam Lyth completed his first Test century in the evening session on day two of the second Test against New Zealand at Headingley as England reached 253-5 at stumps.
Lyth and Cook returned to the crease after tea, but it was not long before the captain was heading back, with Mark Craig trapping the batsman lbw on review.
Gary Ballance joined Lyth in the middle, helping him reach three figures a few overs later, with England seemingly in control.
The centurion was run out for 107 to reduce the home side to 215-2, sparking a late collapse as Ballance followed off a Trent Boult delivery shortly after, while Joe Root added just one before Tim Southee had him caught.
There was another blow for England in the penultimate over of the day as Ben Stokes (6) edged a Boult delivery to slip, leaving England still 97 runs behind at the end of play.
