England batsman Joe Root has scored his maiden Test century in the second Test against New Zealand at Headingley.

The 22-year-old's first century for the Three Lions comes in just his sixth game at the highest level of cricket, as he edged the ball down the third man to the boundary, off the bowling of Doug Bracewell to reach the milestone.

Root passed his previous best score of 73, made against India, and hit his century off just 156 balls, as he hit nine boundaries.

The Yorkshireman becomes the first player from his county to earn his maiden Test ton at Headingley, while he also passed 1000 first-class runs for the season during his innings.
