Joe Root: 'Talk of Kevin Pietersen England return is irrelevant to us'

Joe Root says that talk of Kevin Pietersen's possible England return is "completely irrelevant" as the team are focused on their World Cup campaign.

England batsman Joe Root has described recent suggestions that Kevin Pietersen could work his way back into the international fold as "irrelevant".

At the weekend, new England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves opened the door to a possible return for Pietersen, who was axed last year following England's dismal Ashes campaign in Australia.

The 34-year-old welcomed the news, but Root has distanced himself from the speculation by insisting that he and his teammates are focusing on their World Cup campaign.

"If I ever become the chairman of the ECB then I'll be in a position to comment on that," Root told BBC Sport. "It's completely out of my hands. They are the decisions that need to be made at the top.

"I'm here to play cricket, not make them. We're in the middle of the World Cup and stuff like that is completely irrelevant to us."

England are currently second from bottom in Pool A following three defeats and just one victory in the World Cup.
