England fell to 110-7 after the morning session of day three of the third Test with India and face an uphill task if they are to avoid the follow-on.
Alastair Cook was the only England batsman to offer any continued resistance with a resilient 41, but on a turning pitch England will do well to force India to bat again in the match.
England had started the day steadily by negotiating the first 18 overs of the session without losing a wicket for 28 runs.
However, Cook's and Kevin Pietersen's partnership of 39 came to an end when left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha clean-bowled Pietersen for 17.
That brought Ian Bell to the crease but on his first delivery, he came down the pitch to hole out to Sachin Tendulkar for a golden duck to leave England on 69-5.
Cook's 109-ball resistance came to an end when he was dismissed for 41 as he edged a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery to Virender Sehwag at slip.
Samit Patel was going along nicely with several boundaries to his name but he too fell just before lunch when he was adjudged lbw to Umesh Yadav for 20, although the decision looked somewhat harsh.
Matt Prior and Tim Bresnan survived until lunch but England have it all to do if they are to avoid beginning their second innings during the afternoon session.
