Mahela Jayawardene in talks with England over short-term role

Former Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene is in talks about becoming a batting consultant for England's tour of the UAE to face Pakistan later this year.

Former Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene has held talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board about working with the team later this year.

England travel to the UAE in October to meet Pakistan in three Test matches, four one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.

Mark Ramprakash is currently the team's full-time batting coach, but the ECB has approached Jayawardene about a short-term role after their struggles in the UAE in 2012.

"We have had some initial conversations around a possible short-term role at the start of the UAE tour - given his familiarity with the conditions," an ECB spokesman revealed. "Nothing has been agreed at this stage."

Jayawardene scored 25,957 runs in all formats for Sri Lanka before retiring after the World Cup earlier this year.
