Kevin Pietersen thinks that Alastair Cook will comfortably set a new England record for Test centuries after the pair put their team firmly in control against India in Mumbai.

Keven Pietersen has backed England captain Alastair Cook to set an unbreakable record of Test centuries after both players enjoyed an innings to remember against India.

Cook hit 122 while Pietersen scored 186 on day three of the second Test in Mumbai to help put the visitors in a commanding position.

Pietersen and Cook have both made 22 Test centuries, a record-equalling total for an England batsman.

The South-African born player believes that Cook can go on to take the record outright because he has many years left at the top of the game.

He told BBC Sport: "Alastair Cook will comfortably surpass any hundred total that anybody else who plays for England gets.

"He is a super player, he is a super guy. He should go on to score thousands and thousands of more runs.

"He's only 27, he's a young pup and he is fit. He has a great head. He is very calm and nobody should beat him."

England trail India by 96 runs with a full innings yet to bat after reducing the hosts to 117-7 at the end of day three.
