England forced an Indian follow-on on day four of the fourth Test at the Oval.
The tourists began the day on 103-5 with Rahul Dravid and captain MS Dhoni at the crease.
Dravid, who has been India's most dynamic player in the previous three Tests, made 146 not out as his side made 300 for the first time in the series.
India ended their first innings 291 runs behind England, and captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower decided to put the visitors in for the follow-on.
The second innings proved less fruitful for Dravid, who was controversially given out for 13 from the bowling of Graeme Swann.
A bat-pad decision had previously been reviewed and given not out, but a second incident was sent upstairs and the batsman was dismissed, despite no obvious contact with the ball.
Fellow opener Virender Sehwag was bowled again by Swann for 33, while the wicket of VVS Laxman [24] was claimed by James Anderson.
Sachin Tendulkar could have been out when he was stumped by Matt Prior, but England's fielders failed to appeal, despite the batsman's foot appearing to be off the ground when the bails were knocked off.
India begin the fifth and final day on 129-3 with Tendulkar [35] and Amit Mishra [8] at the crease.
