Live Commentary: The Ashes - Second Test, day three - as it happened

Hello everyone. It was a tough day for England yesterday. Australia dominated to make those dropped catches on day one look even worse. Can the tourists fight back today?

Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin both took advantage of the conditions yesterday to record impressive centuries. Mitchell Johnson bowled with excellent pace in the final session to remove Alastair Cook for just three runs as England continued to struggle.

Michael Carberry (20*) and Joe Root (9*) were asked plenty of questions in the final session but they'll start the day with a big challenge ahead of them. One of those two need to step up for the tourists.

One thing is for certain, this game is not over. Australia are in control but it will be very difficult to collect 20 wickets on this pitch. It's going to be a tough taks for the visitors.

England need to be positive today. Johnson and Harris will bring their best in the first spell of the day but batting will become easier as the day goes on. Another batting failure is not acceptable.

Cook's departure last night was a big blow for England. Australia knew how big that wicket was, but Root and Carberry have the ability to score runs at a decent rate on this track.

It's still very early in this series. Australia are in control but England will be happy if they can reach the third Test just 1-0 down. There's plenty of concerns for the tourists. However, are Australia as good as their recent form suggests?

Nathan Lyon will have a big role to play today. Johnson and Harris often steal the headlines but it's the spinner who will hold the key in this game. England haven't been able to attack Lyon yet in this series. Pietersen vs. Lyon will be interesting.

Play is just 10 minutes away in Adelaide. England cannot afford to hand the session to the hosts. Johnson's first spell will be very important.

England will begin on 35-1, 535 runs behind Australia. They probably need to at least bat until lunch on day four to make sure they don't fall 2-0 behind in this series.

It's flat out there. England must know that, but scoreboard pressure is a funny thing. Lyon isn't Shane Warne, so Carberry and Root need to be positive.

The players are out in the middle now. Harris is going to bowl the first over of the day. Play! Carberry 20 Root 9*

Clarke knows his side are in control but a couple of early wickets will be very important. Root looks solid early on as he keeps out a maiden over. Decent start from Harris. Johnson to bowl the next over.

Carberry, who survived a big lbw appeal yesterday, clips the ball to a fielder at square-leg. The Hampshire ace ducks a sharp bouncer from Johnson. It's not as quite as quick as yesterday, but 91mph isn't exactly military medium. Two maidens in a row.

Root scores the first run of the day thanks to a thick inside edge. Harris just seems to ask questions with every delivery he sends down. Certainly one of the best seamers around. One off the over.

Brilliant pace. Johnson asks the question with some good bouncers but Root blocks once before ducking a fierce short delivery. Good defence, excellent fast bowling. Maiden over.

Carberry plays with soft hands to pick up a couple of runs through third-man. Haddin does well to block the ball down the leg-side when Harris clips the thigh pad. Carberry is finding the middle but the fielders are in place to keep things tight, before a nudge through square-leg brings a couple. Carberry 24 Root 10*

It's another quick over from Johnson but Root has looked very comfortable early on this morning. Plenty of nice defensive strokes on display. Maiden over.

Lyon is into the attack for the first time today. Carberry drops to one knee to sweep a couple over square-leg. Close! The opener lunges forward but the ball drops just short of Bailey, who is fielding at silly mid-off. Promising start for Lyon.

Shot! Johnson is too full at the start of the over and Root reaches the rope with a brilliant drive. A shorter delivery is nudged into the the off-side for one. Carberry follows Root by reaching the rope with a flick off the toes. Nice response from Johnson to beat the outside edge. Carberry finds a quick single to make it 10 from the over.

Carberry takes a step down the pitch to drive Lyon through the covers for four runs. A thick outside edge rotates the strike.

Disaster for England. Root spoils a good start to the day by top edging Lyon to Rogers, who takes an easy catch at deep square-leg. Did he need to play that shot? Pietersen in next.

Clarke follows the wicket by introducing Siddle to the attack. Carberry blocks a couple before handing the strike to Pietersen, who picks out Warner at backward point. The pressure is on England here, they need a partnership.

Carberry has looked good in the early stages of day three. Root's shot may have been silly, but England do need to be positive. Lyon is bowling with nice rhythm, though, and he completes a maiden.

REVIEW! There's an appeal from Haddin when Pietersen flirts with one outside off-stump. It's not convincing, but Clarke decides it's worth a review. Hotspot fails to show a touch on the bat and Marais Erasmus is proved right. Pietersen then gets off the mark by guiding the ball through third-man for a couple. Lovely bowling from Siddle as he nips one back off the seam to beat the inside edge.

Australia strike again! In truth, it's another poor shot from an England batsman. Pietersen shuffles down the pitch and picks out Bailey at mid-wicket, who takes the catch at third time of asking. Big wicket for the hosts.

Ian Bell is the new batsman. Siddle keeps him on strike with some good fielding off his own bowling. A sliced drive earns Bell a couple. The pressure is on.

Carberry sits deep in his crease to push a single into the off-side. Bell drills a couple of firm shots to Siddle at mid-off. Shot! The plan is pretty obvious, but Bell executes the positive shot perfectly to loft six over Lyon's head.

Siddle comes around the wicket to start a new over and he's immediately punished for a no-ball. Carberry picks the gap at cover to collect three runs. Bell takes a risk when he miscues a pull shot into the air, but the ball lands safely on the leg-side. Shot! Bell finds the middle of the bat to pick up four runs through mid-wicket at the end of the over.

Lyon finds some extra bounce to beat the outside edge when Carberry lunges forward. Shot! England's opener punishes a short delivery to hammer four through the off-side. 50! Great moment for Carberry as he reaches his first Test half-century with a single to deep cover. It's been a good innings but there's a lot more work to do. Shot! Siddle changes his pace early in the over, but he's punished for a wider one when Carberry slices four past point. It gets better for Carberry as he fires four more through extra cover with a superb drive. Much better for the tourists. Will it last?

The fielder is back at long-on, so Bell pushes a single at the start of the over. Carberry collects another two with a cut as Lyon continues to search for the perfect length. The opener leaves well when Lyon targets off-stump. Carberry 60 Bell 21*

Close! Harris, on his return to the attack, finds the inside edge but Bell is happy to see the ball drop well short of Haddin. Bell leans forward to drive, with Rogers stepping in to field the ball at point. Shot! Bell finds the middle of the bat late in the over with a perfect cover drive to add four to his side's total.

Shane Watson is introduced to the attack for the first time in the match. Clarke is obviously looking to build pressure, England can't let the all-rounder settle. It's a good start for Watson, who delivers a maiden.

Brilliant over from Harris. No freedom offerend and not a run available. England still trail by 459 runs.

Watson's control will prove to be a big weapon for the hosts today. Carberry seems in no mood to give his wicket away following all the hard work. It's a third maiden in a row from Australia. Pressure building.

Harris is finding the perfect line early in the over. Bell keeps out the fuller deliveries but he's surprised by a brilliant bouncer from the seamer. He just manages to keep out. It's another maiden.

Nelson strikes! Carberry probably thinks he's going to collect four runs but Warner takes a stunning catch to remove the opener. Pressure brings wickets and Watson's tight bowling has made the difference.

Clever captaincy from Clarke as he brings back Johnson before lunch. A big wide from Johnson finally moves England off 111. Plenty of words around the bat at this stage, but Stokes isn't on strike now. Close! Bell takes a risk when he slices the ball over gully but he manages to pick up four runs.

Great bowling, brilliant fielding and some very strange batting in the first session of the day. England are in real danger, Australia will be thinking about a 2-0 lead.

Welcome back everyone. It's been a perfect day so far for Australia. Clarke has managed his bowlers superbly to pile the pressure on the tourists. Root and Pietersen will be disappointed with their shots, but as I said earlier on, scoreboard pressure is a funny thing.

Graham Gooch, England's batting coach, spoke about the tourists being positive today but the mistakes have put them in a difficult position. They need a partnership. Bell (29*) and Stokes (0*) will start again in a few minutes.

England's chances of winning this game are long gone. They now face a battle just to save the Test match. If Australia go 2-0 up, will the series be over?

The tourists start the session 454 runs behind Australia. They're ready for some more cricket in Adelaide. Johnson will bowl the first over of the session. Bell on strike. Play!

Bell is happy to leave the ball outside off-stump early in the over. Johnson, looking for that hint of movement to worry the batsman, goes slightly straighter to force a defensive shot. Bell then dodges a good bouncer. Maiden. Lyon will bowl the next over.

Stokes has played 60 first-class games, but he would have never experienced pressure like this with a bat in his hand. Haddin seems to be enjoying himself as he chirps away behind the stumps. Stokes finds his first run in Test cricket with a sneaky single to Harris, who fumbles the ball at mid-off. Bell 29 Stokes 1*

Big appeal from Johnson for lbw but there's no movement from Erasmus. In the confusion, the ball is thrown to the rope by an Australian fielder. Runs are given to Stokes. Clarke decides to use a REVIEW. Is this the end of Stokes?

It just gets better and better for Australia. Hotspot shows the ball didn't touch the bat and Hawkeye confirms the ball would have knocked back leg-stump. Stokes is forced to depart. England in big trouble, again.

Prior has looked a shadow of the batsman we're used to seeing but he needs to find some form to dig his side out of trouble again. That dismissal a moment ago was the first time a player has been trapped lbw in this series. A couple of short balls make life uncomfortable for Prior as Johnson begins to make this pitch look like Brisbane again.

Johnson does it again! When will Prior's awful run end? Two bouncers are followed by a fuller delivery and Prior can only edge one through to Haddin. Australia just keep on coming in Adelaide. Broad in next.

What a moment! Broad, who delays play for a couple of minutes due to a problem with the sightscreen, shuffles across his crease, but it's the leg-stump that takes the punishment from a 93mph Johnson delivery. It's a triple wicket maiden over from the left-arm seamer. Stunning cricket. You won't see better fast bowling than this from Johnson. He'll be on a hat-trick at the start of his next over.

Lyon keeps it tight early in the over. Bell finds a single to hand the strike to Swann, who won't be eager to face Johnson anytime soon. However, he'll be facing the seamer as he takes a single to deep square-leg. Just two runs off the over.

No hat-trick for Johnson! There's plenty of slips in place but Swann survives by chipping three runs into the leg-side. The Adelaide crowd are loving this at the moment. Shot! Bell, with the weight of the world on his shoulders, leans back to guide four runs over the slips. One more run is added to cover. Johnson's charge is halted, for now.

Lyon's overs seem relatively normal compared to the madness going on at the other end. Bell continues to fight with the blade in hand as he fires four runs through extra cover. England need to reach 371 to avoid the follow-on. Don't rush to put your money on that happening.

Great bowling. Swann hates the bouncer and he's lucky not to depart when he fends the ball into the off-side as Johnson causes problems again. A wild swing is inches away from bringing an outside edge. Swann then punches the ball off the back foot to earn three runs. Bell picks up a run with a clip into the leg-side.

When it's going your way, everything comes off. Swann drives at a fuller ball but he's forced to walk off when Clarke takes a brilliant catch at second slip. Johnson has five wickets. It's been a special spell from the seamer.

It will be a long, long time until you see a better spell of fast bowling than this one from Johnson. Anderson is the next victim as he goes for a golden duck when his middle stump takes a beating.

Luckily for Panesar, Johnson won't be searching for a hat-trick for a few moments. Harris is back into the attack for the hosts. Bell picks up a single to hand the strike to his newest partner. Panesar avoids a sharp bouncer. Close! Watson takes a catch at first slip, but it appears the deflection came off the arm guard. Great fast bowling. Johnson, who has 5-12 in his last three overs, is now on a hat-trick.

Close! Johnson is just a few feet away from a hat-trick as Bell chips the ball short of Rogers at cover. Bell, maybe sensing that the end of the innings is near, misses out when attempts to hook a bouncer. Shot! Bell ruins a maiden over by guiding four runs over the slips.

Panesar must be thinking what has he done to deserve this as Harris sends another couple of bouncers past the helmet. It's a maiden over. The England dressing room is in shock. What a day of cricket.

Johnson's devastating spell of 5-16 comes to an end as Siddle returns to the attack. Bell pushes the ball through the covers to collect a single. Whisper it, but Panesar looks pretty solid as he keeps out the rest of the over from Siddle. Time for a drinks break. Feel free to have something stronger if you're an England fan. Johnson has produced one of the great spells of fast bowling in Adelaide. England look a beaten side out there. Australia have plenty of time to secure a 2-0 series lead.

REVIEW! Harris hits Bell's back pad but there's no raise of the finger. Clarke uses his final review but Hawkeye sides with the umpire on this occasion with the ball only expected to clip the stumps. 50! There's a polite round of applause from the Adelaide crowd as Bell reaches his half-century with four past point. Flower is on his feet, too. Shot! Bell attacks again to loft four more over the bowler's head, before making it three boundaries in a row with a flick through fine-leg. Six! Superb shot over extra cover from Bell to make it 18 from the over. Great effort from him.

It's not a minefield out there, Bell has proved that today. England have been intimidated by Johnson and Australia are winning the mind games. A run for Panesar as he gets off zero with a push into the off-side. The Barmy Army are still singing, despite the position their side is in at the moment. Bell 64 Panesar 1*

Good move from Clarke as he brings on Lyon to test Panesar's technique against the spin. In fairness to England's number 11, he's looking pretty good out there. Maiden over from Lyon.

Andy Flower is like an angry dad watching his kids misbehave as he looks on from the dressing room. What will he say to the top order? Bell lives dangerously as he chips the ball just short of Watson at mid-wicket. The wait for a 10th wicket goes on. Maiden over.

Lyon produces a beauty to send the ball inches over the top of off-stump. Drop! Clarke somehow manages to put down an easy chance at first slip when Panesar edges one. Is that the same man who caught that beauty earlier? Panesar gets away with that mistake.

Solid defence on show from Bell as he continues to lead the fight from the tourists. A shorter ball is pulled to deep square-leg midway through the over for a single. Two leg-byes are added to the total when Panesar takes evasive action to avoid a bouncer and inadvertently deflects the ball with his helmet. Ouch! It's the shoulder's turn to feel the pain as Siddle goes short again at Panesar.

Bell, who probably has the right to call himself England's best player of spin, calmly nudges the ball off his hip for a single. Lyon, with hands on hips, looks frustrated as Panesar blocks well again.

Close! Panesar edges the ball past Warner in the gully to hand the strike to his partner at the start of the over. Shot! Brilliant batting from Bell as he skips down the pitch to launch Lyon for a big six down the ground. Bell 72 Panesar 2*

It's a new challenge for Panesar as Johnson returns for a new spell.

Who else? Johnson ends Panesar's stubborn resistance by hitting the stumps thanks to a deflection off the inside edge. The left-arm seamer ends the innings with figures of 7-40. What a performance.

It's been a long time since we've seen a spell of fast bowling as good as that in Test cricket. Johnson has been simply brilliant today. Will this be remembered as Mitchell's Ashes?

TEA: England have around 20 minutes to digest what happened in that session. The tourists are 398 runs behind Australia. No word yet as to whether the follow-on will be enforced.

There's still two full days remaining in the second Ashes Test but is this series over? If England are struggling to keep out Johnson on a flat pitch, I'm not sure what we're going to see in Perth next week.

Johnson: "It's hard to explain - after the injury I had, to be able to work myself back into this team has been hard work, after plenty of people told me I was never going to play again."

Bell, who finished unbeaten 72, showed his teammates how it should be done. England have not yet passed 200 in this series. You cannot avoid losses in that form.

Australia have confirmed that they will NOT enforce the follow-on. That means Warner is probably going to come out and have a swing as Clarke looks to pile on the misery.

England's bowlers will not be looking forward to this next session. The whole team needs to take responsibility, but it's harsh on the bowlers.

Johnson will have to wait for another go at the England batting lineup. The players are heading out to the middle now, with Australia's second innings just a few moments away.

Cook needs to somehow rally the troops as they look to restore some pride. I don't think Australia will be batting for too long. Rogers and Warner walk out to the middle. Anderson will bowl the first over. Play!

Close! Anderson nearly takes a wicket immediately as Rogers edges the ball just wide of Bell at gully. A couple of runs allow the opener to get off the mark. Prior is forced into a good take down the leg-side later in the over.

Neither Anderson or Broad, who takes the new ball, seem to be in a very good mood out there. You can't blame them. Warner fails to find the middle of the bat when he attempts to cut a wide one from the seamer. Broad strays onto the pads to gift Warner a single on the leg-side. Steady start made by the hosts.

Anderson is too straight, which allows Warner to nudge a single to fine-leg.

Finally something to cheer for the England supporters as Anderson catches the outside edge to give Prior an easy catch behind the stumps. Watson in next for Australia, who lead by 402.

Watson lasts just two deliveries as he slices a loose drive to Carberry at point. It might be a lost cause, but this is a good confidence boost for Anderson.

Clarke will be full of confidence following his century yesterday. No shot offered early on from the home skipper. Great over from Anderson.

Warner attacks a wider one from Broad to collect four on the off-side. A single is then hurried to Panesar on the leg-side. Clarke, aware of the short-leg in place, calmly leaves a full delivery from Broad. There's a hint of movement in the air for England's bowlers.

Warner is quick and he does well to collect two with a nudge off the hip. Sloppy from England. Stokes misses Prior with the throw under no pressure at all to gift Warner a single. Shot! Brilliant timing from Clarke to guide four runs through mid-wicket. Excellent batting. Close! Stokes almost makes up for his earlier mistake when he fields well at mid-wicket before just missing the stumps as Warner hurries to make his ground. A few words exchanged between Clarke and Anderson at the end of the over.

There was no chat at all after the previous over. Just a few stares from Anderson and Clarke. A replay of the throw from Stokes shows that Warner would have been out had the stumps been disturbed. Broad produces a beauty early in the over to beat Clarke's outside edge. It's a very nice line throughout from Broad. Just a single from the over. This ball is definitely doing something in the air.

Lovely stuff from Anderson as he forces Clarke to block on the line of off-stump. Close! A few full deliveries are followed by a good short ball but Anderson can't make the ground to take a catch off the leading edge. Excellent over. Clarke 6 Warner 10*

Broad almost sneaks one through but Warner just manages to sneak a single into the leg-side. Clarke gets on top of the bounce well to pull a run to deep square-leg. Warner adds another to make it three from the over. The lead is 419.

Graeme Swann is into the attack. He needs a couple of wickets to gain some confidence. Nice line from the spinner in his first over to restrict Warner's freedom. It's a maiden.

Cook makes another change as Stokes replaces Broad. The Durham all-rounder starts with a short ball, which is pulled away by Clarke for one. Warner picks the gap at mid-wicket to collect a couple of runs. The strike is then rotated once again, before Clarke pulls another run to fine-leg. Five off the over. Warner 15 Clarke 9*

Swann, from around the wicket, is nudged into the leg-side for one by Clarke. Warner takes advantage of a full delivery to drive four runs past Cook at cover. A thick outside edge runs to third-man for a single. Clarke adds another to long-on.

It's a bit flat out there now. I wonder how long Clarke will think about batting for in the second innings. He'll want Johnson to be fresh. Lunch tomorrow? Stokes breezes through a maiden over. Time for a drinks break.

Will we see some fireworks soon? Clarke and Warner can afford to have a swing now that the new ball has been used for 12 overs. The lead is 431.

There's some good changes of pace from Swann in the over but not too much turn off the pitch as the left-handed Warner blocks out a maiden with apparent ease.

Good bouncer from Stokes to force Clarke to think twice about executing the pull shot. Carberry does very well at point to block a firm cut shot. Clarke fails to punish a full toss as he picks out Broad at mid-off. It's another maiden.

Swann is angry with himself as he drifts down the leg-side to gift three runs to Warner early in the over. Clarke flicks the ball off his pad for a run to square-leg. Shot! First big shot of the innings as Warner drops to one knee to slog-sweep Swann for six. Warner 29 Clarke 12*

Clarke finds the gap on the off-side to pick up a single. Stokes is clocking some decent pace but he hasn't looked that threatening. Warner miscues a pull shot but still manages to collect three runs. Too short from Stokes later in the over and Clarke takes advantage by pulling through mid-wicket for four.

Lovely over from Swann to force Warner to defend on the front foot. Full face of the bat on show as Australia's opener blocks five balls in a row. Lyon will be happy to see Swann get one to explode out of the rough. One bye from the over.

There's some good bounce early on for Panesar as he begins his first spell of the innings. Warner is struggling to get bat on ball as the left-arm spinner changes his pace impressively. Just one run from the over.

Swann looks dangerous early in the over but his frustration is clear when Warner brings up the 50 partnership by lofting four runs over extra cover. Another run is added following a push to long-off, before Clarke clips up two by working the ball smartly to fine-leg. One more makes it eight off the over. The lead is 459. Warner 38 Clarke 20*

Clarke shuffles down the pitch to nudge Panesar into the leg-side for one. Warner leaves well as England's spinner finds some extra bounce outside off-stump. Will a big attack be on the way soon?

Clarke once again picks up a single early in the over. Too wide from Swann, who probably isn't in the mood to see Warner smashing the ball all over Adelaide. Just one more run added to the lead, which is now 463.

What a beauty from Panesar as he beats Clarke with some turn and bounce to clip the top of off-stump. That's a perfect delivery from the spinner. No chance for Clarke there. Steve Smith in next.

Smith shows his intent as he skips down to nudge his second ball into the leg-side for one. Panesar is bowling it much quicker now as he looks to trouble the hosts with some extra bounce. Warner opens the face of the bat to push a single through point.

Warner steers a single through cover. Smith drills the ball to point and misses out on a run off a shorter delivery. England's spinners keeping things pretty tight in the last few overs. Warner 42* Smith 1

Beautiful shot from Warner to collect four through extra cover. The opener then gets on top of the bounce to find a single behind square on the leg-side. No magic from Monty in his latest over.

Warner plays a risky cut just short of Carberry at backward point, before moving closer to a half-century with a push to deep cover. Smith rotates the strike again by nudging one to long-on. Decent control on show from Swann, who might be under pressure from Panesar for the role of the spinner in Perth.

Smith walks forward to find a single on the leg-side. Poor fielding from Pietersen at point brings a cheer from the crowd and it also gifts a boundary to Warner, who passes 50. Another couple of runs are added through third-man. Shot! Too short from Panesar and Warner cashes in to cut four more through the covers. Time for a drink in Adelaide. Warner 58 Smith 3*

Australia now lead by 484. There's been a few bad days on this tour for England already, but surely this must be a new low for Cook's men. 14 overs left in the day.

Anderson returns for a new spell following the drinks break. Smith reaches the rope for the first time in the innings by drilling a wider ball past point for four. DECISION OVERTURNED! Smith gets a life as he reviews an lbw decision after being given out while not playing a shot. Hawkeye shows that the ball didn't nip back enough and Anderson is denied a third wicket.

Warner charges down the pitch to drive three through extra cover early in the over. Smith picks up a single when he cuts the ball past point. Big appeal for lbw from Panesar but Kumar Dharmasena isn't convinced, and neither are England. That one would have missed leg-stump. Warner 61 Smith 8*

Smith plays a lazy shot outside off-stump and he's lucky not to edge one through to Prior. Carberry does well on the off-side to restrict the same batsman to a single just moments later. There's another appeal for lbw from England when Warner misses a straight one but the ball would have went over the stumps. Just one off the over.

Much more convincing from Smith, who moves into double figures with a lofted shot down the ground for four. Good response from Panesar following the early boundary to force Smith to block out the rest of the over.

Anderson has bowled pretty well in this innings and he possibly could have had more than two wickets. Warner is looking in very good touch as he finds the middle of the bat while defending early in the over. The opener then clubs the ball over mid-on to take Australia's lead past 500.

Broad is back for a new spell and he's saved by Root at cover as Warner fails to punish a loose delivery. The seamer is short again midway through the over, which allows Warner to hammer four over wide mid-on's head. A nudge into the leg-side brings another run to the opener. The lead is 505.
