Australia produced a stunning comeback to shock England on day two in Brisbane as they took control of the first Ashes Test.
Brad Haddin (94) failed to record his century in the first session as England found two quick wickets to dismiss the hosts for 295 in their first innings, with Stuart Broad finishing with figures of 6-81.
England made a steady start in reply but a batting collapse saw the tourists fall from 82-1 to 136 all out as Mitchell Johnson (4-61) starred with the ball in the afternoon session.
Australia's day was made even better as David Warner (45*) and Chris Rogers (15*) guided their team to 65-0 at the close of play to give the hosts a lead of 224.

Hello everyone. England took control on day one in Brisbane as Australia were made to struggle with the bat. Stuart Broad ignored the jeers to claim five wickets and reduce the hosts to 273-8. Can Australia fight back today?
The Ashes got underway yesterday in exciting fashion and it was the hosts who produced their best at The Gabba. Australian supporters were thinking of 400+ after Michael Clarke had won the toss but they were left thanking Brad Haddin for his rescue act at the close of play.
Haddin will start the day unbeaten on 78 and it was his partnership with Mitchell Johnson (64) which ensured that the hosts were not dismissed for an embarrassing total. Ryan Harris (4*) will resume alongside Haddin.
England will be desperate to pick up those final two wickets quickly in the first session. Haddin will have other ideas and he's shown us before just how good he is at batting with the lower order. In truth, 273-8 isn't good enough on a batting paradise but another 60 or 70 runs will put the pressure on the tourists.
The local paper are refusing to use Broad's name in any of their coverage and that made things very difficult following his exploits on day one. Broad was excellent throughout the day and he certainly deserved five wickets.
I think the most surprising thing on day one was the Australian batting order's apparent inability to build a Test match innings. David Warner, Shane Watson and Steve Smith all made starts but poor mistakes cost them their wickets.
There's been a lot of talk from the hosts prior to this series but they cannot afford to not deliver for the second day in a row. A loss in the first Test match will make it very difficult for Clarke's side to win the urn back. They'll get a second chance in just over 15 minutes.
The second new ball is only 10 overs old, so Broad and James Anderson should find some movement early on. Anderson did his job very well yesterday to support Broad with figures of 2-61 from his 22 over. Chris Tremlett's performance (1-51) was another positive for the tourists as he impressed on his return to the Test side.
England need to remain patient in the first session. Alastair Cook will be eager not to leak many runs as he looks to continue from where his side left off yesterday. Haddin will attack early on and England will be wary of Harris, who can score quickly.
The tourists will expect to be batting before lunch, anything else will probably be seen as a failure. It's important for them to produce their best this morning.
Haddin is waiting patiently on the boundary as play quickly approaches. Not too many supporters inside the ground yet but the Barmy Army are already making some noise.

The players are out on the field now with the umpires and everything looks to be in place. Australia begin on 273-8 with Haddin (78*) and Harris (4) at the crease. Broad starts the day with the ball in hand.
Haddin leaves alone the first couple of balls before scoring the first run with a quick single to mid-on. Harris starts the day with a nice punch through the covers for two runs. Broad responds with a short ball but the Australia number 10 easily avoids the danger. A clip off the pads brings a couple more runs to Harris.
Anderson takes the ball from the other end and he immediately finds a good length with the first delivery. Haddin finds the middle of the bat on a couple of occasions but there's no runs on offer. Excellent stuff to start the day from Anderson but a maiden over is ruine when a thick edge hands Haddin a single.
Haddin takes on the short ball with two men out on the hook and he's fortunate not to deliver an edge through to Prior. Carberry fields well in the deep to restrict Haddin to one when he cuts through the covers. Anderson's leg gets stuck in the ground, which allows Harris to sneak a single. That could have hurt England's bowler, who did a similar thing yesterday. Haddin rotates the strike again with a push past point.
WICKET! HARRIS (9) C PRIOR B BROAD
England get the early wicket they desperately wanted on the second morning as Broad claims another victim. Harris isn't sure whether to leave or play and when he attempts the first option, the tail-end batsman gives an easy catch to Prior. Nathan Lyon in next.
Carberry once again does well in the deep at the start of a new over to prevent Haddin from reaching the rope with a cut shot. Three runs are taken and the strike is handed to Lyon. The number 11 handles the challenge well to survive the remainder of Anderson's over. Haddin 85* Lyon 0
Haddin's intentions are clear as he swings wildly at a wider one from Broad, who is hunting a seven-wicket haul. An inside edge allows Haddin to sneak a single as his trust in Lyon continues. A confident shot behind square on the leg-side earns Lyon his first run, before Haddin rotates the strike again with a push to point. Broad finds some good bounce at the end of the over but there's no mistake made by Lyon.
Anderson goes full to Haddin, who drives through extra cover for one. Lyon is being forced to play, which is good for England, but the number 11 has looked solid so far. There's an unconvincing appeal from England for caught behind but they decide against reviewing and a replay shows the noise came from the ball flicking the forearm. Just a single from the over.
Haddin takes on the short ball to pull four runs through mid-wicket and move into the nineties. He attempts to repeat the trick a ball later but he comes close to edging the ball to Prior. Cook moves second slip to deep mid-wicket as England look to restrict Haddin's scoring options. A single is then taken to deep cover. First lesson of the day - do not take on Carberry's throw. Haddin attempts a secon run when he pushes the ball through point but the Hampshire ace is too quick for the Australian wicketkeeper. Prior does well to take an awkward catch and knock the bails off before Haddin can make his ground. England remove Australia for 295.
Broad salutes the crowd as he leads the England team off the field. There's still some jeers from the Australians but I think everyone inside the ground knows just how good Broad has been. He finishes the innings with figures of 6-81.
England turn their attention to batting now. Cook and Carberry will walk out to the middle in just a few moments to begin the reply. Captain Cook has seen it all before but there will definitely be some nerves for Carberry, who will be feeling the pressure. He's a very popular man in England and he certainly deserves success at the highest level. The pitch still looks a very good one for batting.
Australia must forget about their troubles with the bat. 295 is a below-par total, they'll know that but it's all about wickets now. There will be some movement early on but batting will become much easier very quickly. An early breakthrough is crucial for the hosts.
The players are back out on the field now, with Cook and Carberry following Clarke's side out to the middle. It's a big period for both teams before the lunch break. Harris will bowl the first over. Cook is on strike. Play!
The innings starts with a leg-bye when Harris strays onto Cook's thigh pad. Haddin and Warner are both eager to have an early word with Carberry. The Hampshire opener immediately gets underway with a nudge into the leg-side for a couple. A firm push past the bowler earns Carberry two more and he then takes the opportunity to get off strike with a flick through fine-leg. Six from the first over.
Johnson is the man who shares the new ball with Harris. The England supporters have already started with that famous song.
Brilliant support from the home supporters for Johnson, who starts with a delivery down the leg-side. The seamer is immediately clocked at over 90mph as Carberry collects a single with a clip off the heels. Johnson is eager to stick with a full length, but his line is poor as Cook collects four through fine-leg. An attempted yorker is pushed to safety by the touring skipper. Great shot from Cook as he takes advantage of shorter delivery to pull four over mid-wicket.
Carberry sits deep in his crease to work Harris behind square on the leg-side for a single. Cook knows when to play and when to leave as Harries targets the off-stump. Impressive early signs for England on what still looks like a very flat pitch.
If you want to learn how to defend on the front foot, take a picture of Carberry. The experienced county opener has looked relaxed in the early stages of this innings. Johnson finally finds the right line with the fuller ball as Carberry is beaten by a beauty for the first time. That's probably the first hint of swing we've seen. Shot! Harris has found a very good length but he probably needs to go a touch fuller to encourage the drive from Cook, who looks in no mood to make a mistake early. A clip off the pads earns the England captain two runs at the end of the over. The tourists are calming the nerves well early on. Peter Siddle will now replace Johnson.
Siddle drifts down the leg-side with the first ball in the over. There's some good bounce for the seamer but Carberry isn't looking to play too often when the ball is close to the off-stump. Some more bounce surprises the opener but he pushes the ball to safety. A nudge off the hip brings Carberry two runs through mid-wicket. Decent start from Siddle. Cook 12* Carberry 13
The Australian supporters haven't found their voice yet today but a wicket soon would certainly change that. Harris looks to be in good rhythm as he continues his opening spell. Haddin receives a pat on the back from his captain when he dives to his right to collect a wayward delivery from Harris. No runs on offer for Cook.
Carberry's confidence continues to grow as he nudges a run into the leg-side. Cook follows his partner by picking up a single with a similar shot. Siddle finds a good length but a lack of movement in the air means Carberry is happy to leave the ball. Haddin is forced into action down the leg-side again late in the over. It's all a bit comfortable for England at the moment.

Big wicket for the hosts as Harris removes the England captain. Cook is encouraged to play just outside off-stump and his first mistake leads to his departure as he edges one through to Haddin. Crucial breakthrough for Australia.
Jonathan Trott is the new batsman for England and it's no surprise to see Harris go short to the Warwickshire ace, who struggled to cope with the bouncer in the summer. Trott picks out the fielder at short mid-wicket when he attempts to punch his first run off the back foot. A fuller delivery from Harris gives Trott the opportunity to get off the mark with four through mid-wicket. Important over from Harris.
Clarke responds to Trott's arrival by bringing back Johnson, who starts the over by drifting down the leg-side while bowling to Carberry. The left-arm seamer continues to struggle as Carberry reaches the rope at fine-leg with a flick off the hip. Steve Smith is then moved to leg-slip by his captain. More runs for Carberry when he pushes the ball through the covers for two. Johnson doesn't get a look at Trott in his return to the attack. Carberry 20 Trott 4*
Trott, in his own unique way, is eager to open up the leg-side throughout the over. Harris settles on a good length to make sure that the whip through mid-wicket isn't an option. It's a maiden. 20 minutes left in the session.
Johnson has had enough of drifting down the leg-side, so he brings out the short stuff for Carberry. However, the line is still not right from the seamer and Carberry cashes in to pick up four through fine-leg again. England's surviving opener doesn't seem to be too concerned by the bouncer in the over. Another shot behind square on the leg-side allows Carberry to steal the strike.
Despite the protests from Harris, Kumar Dharmasena dismisses any suggestion that the ball needs to be replaced. Siddle returns to the attack. First mistake from Carberry as he attempts to cut a ball too close to his body. No edge, thankfully for the opener. A leg-slip, and a short-leg are in place for Trott, who is immediately struck on the glove by a 90mph bouncer from Johnson. The Australian supporters react positively to the aggressive bowling but Trott wins the next mini battle to collect three runs through square-leg. Carberry isn't too concerned about leg-slip as he earns another run to fine-leg. Trott watches the next bouncer pass him down the leg-side. Plenty of words directed at Trott from the fielders in close but he never seems to be too bothered. A clip behind square on the leg-side brings two more to the England number three. Good battle. Siddle catches a thick edge, which earns Carberry three runs through third man. Trott leaves well outside off-stump as Siddle is given some praise by the slips for his line and length. England's number three shuffles across his crease to pick up a single through fine-leg with an unconvincing shot. One more over to be bowled.

Australia sneak in one more over and their eagerness has paid off. Trott is clearly concerned about the short ball as he tickles the ball down the leg-side to Haddin, who takes the catch. Huge moment in the game as Johnson makes a big contribution. The umpires decide it's time for some lunch.
LUNCH: England would have been content if they reached lunch just one wicket down but Trott's dismissal hands the momentum to Australia. Carberry has played well for his 31* and he'll be joined by Pietersen at the crease when the players return.

Pietersen is on his toes to push the short ball from Johnson to safety. Australia's left-arm seamer goes short again, Pietersen attempts the hook, but there's no edge involved. Carberry will be looking to play himself back in following the 40-minute break. A straight delivery midway through the over allows the opener to nudge a single into the leg-side. Pietersen is finding the middle of the bat with his defensive strokes early in his innings. Johnson is accurate with his line to the right-handed number four early in the over but a shorter ball encourages Pietersen to pull powerfully to the rope behind square.
Siddle continues for now and he's not too far away from the edge when he finds some extra bounce. Carberry probably did just enough to pull his bat away. Harris has been told that he'll be back into the attack in just a few moments. Pietersen, for the 100th time in Test cricket, begins his innings by taking those trademark big strides forward. Siddle breezes through his over and completes a maiden thanks to some support from Lyon at cover.
Carberry is remaining very watchful outside off-stump as Harris begins a new spell by shaping the ball away from the opener. Clarke won't be too happy with the amount of deliveries Carberry is leaving alone at the moment. A shot does arrive later in the over as Carberry picks up two through mid-wicket.
Nice timing from Pietersen to earn two runs to deep mid-wicket. Drop! Chance for Siddle when Pietersen chips one straight back at the bowler, who can't react to take the catch. He'll be disappointed with himself there. It came to him at a good height. To add to the disappointment, Siddle also requires treatment on one of his fingers. Pietersen breathes a sigh of relief. Still no sign of Lyon yet but I reckon Clarke won't leave it too much longer before he turns to spin. Pietersen confidently shuffles across his crease to flick two through square-leg. A distraction in the crowd forces Pietersen to step away as Harris was about to release the ball. One run to fine-leg turns to two thanks to a wild throw. Gasps can be heard from the slips when Pietersen bravely leaves a ball which just misses off-stump. Warner hits the stumps from gully when Pietersen calls for another sneaky single. The umpire is confident enough to reject the appeal, much to Australia's annoyance. A thick inside edge hands Carberry another run on the leg-side. Pietersen's miscued drive goes straight to mid-off as England settle for two from the over. It's time for Lyon.
Lyon hasn't got too much to work with just yet as the cracks haven't fully opened at the Gabba. Carberry has plenty of support around the bat but he's a decent player of spin. Harris switches ends to replace Siddle. Great line and length from the bowler, but Pietersen won't mind feeling bat on ball.

That's the wicket Australia wanted! Pietersen finds the middle of the bat again but he picks out Bailey, who takes a good catch at mid-wicket. Big breakthrough for the hosts.
Ian Bell comes out to the middle as the players take a drinks break. Can he succeed against this opposition once again? Australia won't want to see a lot of him. Huge phase of play before tea.
Carberry continues to go about his business as he begins life with a new partner. Lyon has settled well early in his spell, with England's opener having no choice but to see out a maiden over. Carberry 40 Bell 0*
Harris immediately asks Bell to have a drive but the invite isn't accepted by the new batsman. No shot offered by Bell early in the over. Bell, like Pietersen before him, clips the ball into the air through mid-wicket but his reward is two runs. Good pressure from the hosts.
Warner has plenty to say at silly mid-off but Carberry isn't giving him a second glance. Lyon will be encouraged by the bounce he is finding. Good defensive technique shown by Carberry. His role is becoming more and more important. Maiden over.
Good decision from Clarke to turn to Johnson, who didn't get the opportunity to bowl at Bell in the Test series during the summer. There's a man out on the hook and a short-leg in place but it's full from Johnson early on. Bell pushes the ball into a gap on the off-side for a single. The Gabba urges Johnson on and he responds by producing a beauty to beat Carberry's outside edge. It's a quick over from Johnson. One run scored. Carberry 40 Bell 3*
Bell blocks a couple, before rocking back to cut Lyon away for a couple and end the run of dot balls off the spinner. Clarke needs his spinner to continue this good work. Bell firmly drives down the ground but Harris makes the block at mid-off. Steady stuff from England.
A short-leg comes in for Carberry, who hasn't faced much short balls yet. Judging by Johnson's first delivery, I think there will be a few more. Carberry takes a blow to the ribs as the Gabba comes alive again. Plenty of applause for the bowler when Carberry misses with a wild hook shot.

The plan works for Australia! Johnson, from around the wicket, hits the edge high up on the bat and Watson takes the catch at slip. Carberry was on 40 for 35 minutes and that's what he must settle for in his first Ashes innings. That was Johnson, at his best. Joe Root in next. England in trouble.
Great cricket from Australia. Root is surely expecting the bouncer when a short-leg is put in place by Clarke, but the bluff follows and the new batsman almost nicks one to Haddin. The new batsman survives. Superb wicket maiden from Johnson.

Australia are on a roll! Lyon gets the wicket he deserves when a bit of extra bounce causes Bell to prod the ball straight to Smith at short-leg. England are on the ropes as Prior walks out to the middle. They trail the hosts by 208.

Two wickets in two balls for Australia! Lyon doesn't seem interested at first but Smith is convinced that he's taken a genuine catch at short-leg. Clarke is persuaded to review the not out decision and Hotspot shows a big edge. England fans, look away. The Gabba is rocking and Lyon is on a hat-trick.
No hat-trick for Lyon! Broad is greeted by a chorus of boos but he's not asked to play by the spinner. Lyon completes a double-wicket maiden over. What a spell of play for the hosts. England are going nowhere. Root 0* Broad 0
Root gets off the mark with a couple of runs through cover. It might be down to the Yorkshire ace to save his side today. Root is very comfortable defending on the back foot as Johnson continues to record speeds of over 90mph.

It just keeps getting worse for England. Root is the next man to be dismissed as he chases a wide one from Johnson and edges the ball to Smith, who takes another good catch at third slip. England still trail by 206 runs. What a fightback from the hosts!
Swann does not like the short ball. So, I'm sure you can guess how Johnson greets the new batsman. Swann manages to survive the over. Australia in complete control in Brisbane. I promise you, this is a good batting pitch.
Lyon catches the outside edge but the contact is firm enough to give Broad two runs. Another thick edge sails past gully as Australia continue to pile the pressure on. Tremlett sits on the sidelines with his pads on. I don't think anyone was expecting that at this stage. England have lost their last five wickets for just seven runs.
Swann watches one short ball pass him, before ducking to avoid the second bouncer.

TEA: Take a breath everyone. England were firm favourites at the start of the day but a stunning session of cricket means that they face a big battle to save this game. The tourists have scored just 39 runs since lunch, losing six wickets in the process. Johnson has been devastating, Lyon has supported well and Clarke's captaincy was superb throughout the session. England trail the hosts by 201.
The England changing room will be in shock. What can you say after that session? It's going to be difficult to take for Cook's side. It looks like they'll be bowling again soon.
England still need two runs to avoid the follow-on. Would Clarke dare ask the tourists to bat again? England have continued their poor run of first innings scores at the start of a series. The Gabba is still rocking.
Clarke will be absolutely delighted with the response from his bowlers. 295 looked like a disappointing total but the hosts could start their second innings leading by 200.
Have you recovered yet? I'm not sure I have just yet. It's now been 17 innings since England have reached 400. That really is a worrying statistic for Cook's side. They'll struggle to reach 100 today.
Johnson can be frustrating, or he can be fantastic. It's not difficult to decide which one he's been today. He currently has figures of 4-46 with the ball and the 64 he scored yesterday alongside Haddin looks very important now.

Surprise move from Clarke as he replaces Lyon with Harris. The returning seamer follows Johnson's lead by starting with a bouncer, which Broad awkwardly works onto the leg-side for one. Harris comes around the wicket to target Tremlett, who takes one on the glove. The England supporters are still singing. You must applaud them for that but maybe it's the beer starting to work. One run from the over.
Johnson drifts down the leg-side and Broad takes advantage to clip four runs through fine-leg. A wider delivery is punched through the covers for two more. Ouch! Johnson gives Broad a long stare when he strikes the arm and the helmet with one fierce bouncer. Painful for England, in more than one way.
Tremlett just misses Bailey at short-leg with a clip off the hip for two runs. Harris continues with the bouncers to England's number 10 but a yorker would be a good option soon. Tremlett survives another over. Johnson confirms to Clarke that he wants one more go with the ball.
There's a brief delay out in the middle as a replacement helmet is rushed out to Broad, who looks to be nursing a sore neck following that Johnson bouncer a couple of overs ago.

Anderson keeps out the first delivery with a thick inside edge. Harris goes fuller to the new batsman early on but when he does drop his length, Haddin is unable to prevent four byes from being added to England's total.
It looked like Johnson wouldn't get another over but his spell continues as he goes in search of a five-wicket haul. Broad takes on the short delivery but he misses out with a wild swing. Johnson comes back over the wicket and he's frustrated to see Broad hurry a couple of runs off a thick inside edge. England's hero with the ball almost gifts Johnson an easy return catch but he survives. A leg-bye means Broad will keep the strike.
Lyon is back into the attack to replace Harris. The spinner is currently boasting figures of 2-7. Broad drops to one knee to paddle sweep a couple of runs through fine-leg. There's an optimistic shout for a catch when Broad cuts two more to deep cover. Another sweep follows to earn the same batsman a single. England trail by 173.
Siddle, the only member of the attack not to take a wicket, is given a chance to wrap up the innings. Broad greets the seamer with a superb pull shot for four through mid-wicket. A bouncer passes the edge as Broad threatens to execute a similar shot, before a nudge off the hip hands the strike to Anderson. Siddle joins the short ball party to sting Anderson's hands. Chance! Broad calls for two following a push to cover but Lyon can't collect the throw to run out Anderson. The spinner drops his length slighty, which allows Broad to pick up another run to deep mid-wicket. Anderson is left feeling for the ball around off-stump as Lyon beats the outside edge. A wider ball is cut past point for two at the end of the over. England trail by 163.
Broad smiles at Siddle when he just misses a cut shot outside off-stump. Shot! Broad is showing a great attitude as he reaches the rope again with an unorthodox pull shot.

England's innings comes to an end when Broad takes on the short ball again and proceeds to pick out Rogers, who takes a very good catch in the deep. What an effort from the hosts. Australia lead by 159.
It's not over yet. Anderson and Broad will be thrown the new ball in just a few moments as they look to wrestle back some of the control. It's been a fantastic day of cricket in Brisbane and the entertainment keeps on coming.
England's bowlers have been let down by the batting order today. They would not have been expecting to bowl again today but they now need to create some magic with around 90 minutes left in the day. Early wickets are crucial.
England's mistakes will be talked about all night in Brisbane but you have to give plenty of credit to Australia. Johnson produced a fierce spell of fast bowling and he was well supported by both Lyon and Harris.
Is there more drama to come tonight? The players are walking back out to the middle now for Australia's second innings. What a thrilling opening Test match this has been so far.
Cook has to somehow rally the troops now for this final phase of play at the Gabba. Warner and Rogers march out to the middle to begin the innings. Stuart Broad is not on the field yet. It will be Anderson to bowl the first over. 25 overs scheduled to be bowled.
There's some good bounce for Anderson. Rogers gets off the mark with a pushed single into the off-side. If Warner is allowed to settle, he could make it an even worse day for the tourists. The opener gets underway with four thanks to a brilliant cut shot.
Broad has returned to the field and he will share the new ball with Anderson. England need something special again from the seamer.

Warner pierces the gap again to collect three runs with a cut. Rogers is leaving the ball very well early in his inngins. There's an embarrasing moment for Pietersen on the boundary when he's asked for an autograph by a fan, who quickly changes his mind to leave the England man in an awkward position. Easy single available for Warner following a defensive prod. Broad appeals for caught behind when he finds some extra bounce. The slips don't look convinced and they decide against reviewing the not out decision. Hotspot doesn't show an edge. Lovely stroke from Rogers to earn three with a push down the ground. The wait for a breakthrough goes on.
Anderson's face says it all when Rogers clips four runs through fine-leg. Five dot balls follow from the seamer. It's been a confident start to the second innings from the hosts. Cook looks to have the weight of the world on his shoulders as he looks on from first slip. Warner 15* Rogers 5
Warner picks out Carberry at point with a powerful cut shot. The opener decides against attacking a well-directed bouncer from Broad. Australia's batting duo are making the pitch look flat again, there's still plenty of runs to be scored over the next few days. Warner guides a wider delivery over point to reach the rope again. There's a short delay as the ground staff make some repairs to the bowler's run-ups. It's much darker in Brisbane now. The floodlights have been on for a while. Fingers crossed the players aren't taken off early. Australia lead by 187.
Brilliant effort from Pietersen to stop Rogers from collecting four following a firm drive down the ground. Three runs brings Warner to the danger end but the strike is rotated again thanks to a leg-bye. Will Swann have some luck against the two left-handed openers? It's Tremlett's turn first. It's a loose start from Tremlett but Warner earns just one with a cut. Rogers does not look in the mood to give his wicket away cheaply. Shot! It's the turn of Rogers to reach the rope as he cuts Tremlett past point for four. Australia are cruising.
Swann is introduced to the attack by Cook. The spinner starts with a line tight to Warner's body. A bit of bounce almost surprises Warner, who is already eager to use his feet, but a push past point brings two runs. Lovely control shown by Swann as he settles on a good length. Rogers almost chops on when he miscues a cut shot. Great delivery from Tremlett to hit the thigh pad and make life uncomfortable for the batsman. England quickly abandon appeals for caught behind when they realise that a noise comes from the back pad later in the over. Much better over from Tremlett.
Swann is doing all he can to make a breakthrough as a thick outside edge evades Bell at gully to hand Warner a couple. The same batsman uses his feet to great effect to drive the ball through extra cover for three more. Swann is giving the ball every chance to spin but he might have to settle for bounce as he beats the outside edge late in the over. The lead is 203.
Warner continues to bat with positive intent as he moves to 30 with three through mid-wicket. Rogers is showing off all of his defensive strokes as Tremlett desperately searches for something to England to celebrate. Just under 30 minutes left of play.
Swann, varying his pace and length, keeps asking Warner to play his shots and the Australian opener is more than happy to oblige as he picks out a couple of fielders on the off-side. What must be on Cook's mind? No smiles on England faces at the moment. Warner 30 Rogers 12*
Tremlett attempts a yorker, why not at this stage? Rogers is aware of the threat as he jabs his bat down to keep the ball out. Pace has been the big differnece today. Tremlett is operating at around 80mph, compared to Johnson's 90mph+ spell earlier in the day. Nothing against the Surrey seamer, but it was pace that caused the problems for England. Maiden over.
Warner gives the crowd something more to cheer with a superb drive through the covers for four off Swann. The footwork on display is impressive but England's spinner shouldn't mind facing such an attack minded opponent. Just the boundary from the over. The lead is 210.
Cook, probably with one eye on the close of play, brings Root on for the first time. Close! It's a confident start from the part-time spinner and he's not too far away from a wicket when Rogers prods the ball past Bell at silly mid-off. Maiden over.
Shot! Great play from Warner as he launches Swann over mid-wicket for four runs. The spinner almost produces the perfect response when he attempts to sneak through with a quicker ball. Carberry does well at backward point to stop a late cut from Rogers, who is struggling to score off Swann. Warner 39* Rogers 12
Good line and length from Root to Warner, who remains eager to get his front foot forward. A single is taken to long-off by Warner. Carberry impresses in the field again late in the over to frustrate Rogers once more.
Carberry makes a mistake this time at backward point to gift Warner a couple of runs. Swann gets some good bounce to beat the bat but Warner responds with a cut for three. Rogers hurries a single when he pushes the ball to point. Six off the over. Five minutes left.
One last attack for the tourists as Cook brings back Broad. The seamer's pace is down though as a difficult day at the office begins to become obvious. Rogers misjudges the length of a slightly shorter ball and the ball clips the helmet on its way through to Prior. The Middlesex ace finishes the day by nudging two runs into the leg-side. CLOSE OF PLAY: England started the day in complete control but now they face a big battle to save anything from this game at the Gabba. A stunning spell of cricket midway through the day means that Australia hold all the cards at the end of day two. The hosts lead by 224 runs.
Australia were on the ropes this time yesterday, but not now. England's day could not have gone any worse. Can they recover from this setback? Warner, Clarke, Johnson and Harris will have other ideas.
