Mitchell Johnson half-century gives Australia hope

Mitchell Johnson and Steve Smith both hit half-centuries to give Australia a chance of batting out a draw in their first Test against Pakistan.

Mitchell Johnson hit a half-century in the afternoon session on the final day of Australia's first Test against Pakistan to give the tourists hope of salvaging a draw.

The visitors had been facing a heavy defeat in Dubai when they were reduced to 117-7 at lunch, having trailed Pakistan by 437 heading into their second innings.

Steve Smith and Johnson were at the crease when the action resumed, and the duo showed some resilience before Smith was dismissed for 55 by Yasir Shah, ending their 65-run partnership.

Peter Siddle joined Johnson in the middle, but it was the left-arm paceman who kept the majority of the runs coming as he reached 54 off 110 balls before tea, while Siddle added a patient four.

The pair headed into the pavilion with Australia at 196-8, but Pakistan need just two wickets in the final session to secure the win.
