The first Test match between Australia and South Africa in Brisbane has finished in a draw.

Captains Michael Clarke and Graeme Smith made the decision to shake hands early with the draw inevitable after South Africa had reached 166-5 for a lead of 51 runs with less than an hour of play remaining.

Australia had earlier declared 565-5 with Clarke unbeaten on 259 to give themselves a 115-run advantage over the tourists.

Alviro Petersen was dismissed for five to get Australia's pursuit of an unlikely victory off to a perfect start, but timely knocks from Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis ensured that the draw was always the likely result.

The second Test match begins in Adelaide on November 22.
