Australia XI, India tour match cancelled following Phil Hughes death

A two-day tour match between a Cricket Australia XI and India is cancelled following the death of batsman Phil Hughes.

A two-day tour match between a Cricket Australia XI and India has been cancelled following the death of batsman Phil Hughes at the age of 25.

The Australian suffered a rare case of vertebral artery dissection after he was struck in the head by a bouncer bowled by Sean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Cricket Australia's Pat Howard said in a statement: "Today we were reminded that cricket is just a game and it is the characters that play the game that make it so special.

"We have spoken to the players and have made the decision based on the best interest of all concerned. Several of the CA XI players have returned home to seek support and solace from their family, friends and teammates.

"We appreciate the support and cooperation shown by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, team management and the India players who have been nothing but respectful during this tragic time."

Hughes played 26 Tests and 25 one-day internationals for Australia.
