The skipper was caught at second slip by Ian Bell while trying to swipe a delivery to the off side, leaving his team 78-3.
Shane Watson (43) was dismissed seven runs shy of his half-century as James Anderson trapped him lbw just before lunch.
George Bailey (1) was the only wicket to fall in the second session, as he was caught by Alastair Cook off the bowling of Broad.
However, with the Three Lions in the ascendancy, Smith and Haddin have proved themselves effective partners to restore Aussie hopes of posting a competitive first-innings total.
