Great Britain canoeing team expects "fierce" competition

Team GB canoeing performance director John Anderson believes that Britain will face "fierce competition" at the European Games in Baku.

Team GB's canoeing performance director has admitted that he is expecting competition to be "extremely fierce" at the European Games in Baku.

Great Britain has taken a team of 14 athletes for the kayak and canoe competitions, competing in 13 of the 15 events.

John Anderson said: "We are looking forward to getting racing underway on Sunday as part of Team GB at the European Games and it is an important competition for us in the build-up to World Championships in Milan in August, which is the first stage of Olympic qualification for Rio 2016.

"We have selected our strongest possible team, which includes six Olympians and three Olympic medallists from London. We are targeting some good performances at this exciting new European event, but are under no illusions that the competition in Canoe Sprint will be extremely fierce."

Britain won two golds, one silver and a bronze during the London Olympics.
