Joe Ham 'to go professional'

Scotland boxer Joe Ham intends to seek a professional career in his sport after being eliminated from the Commonwealth Games.

Scotland boxer Joe Ham has revealed that he intends to seek a professional career in his sport.

Ham, who has had close to 200 amateur fights, bowed out of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the quarter-final stage on Wednesday after losing to England's Qais Ashfaq.

The bantamweight believes that "three, three-minute rounds" does not suit his style of boxing and has vowed to take the next step in his career.

"Three three-minute rounds does not really suit my style of boxing, I come on stronger as the fight goes on. I am never really a good starter and will try something different now," he told reporters.

"I have been to four Europeans, World Championships, two Commonwealth Games. I have had 175 amateur fights and been all over the world, travelling since I was 14, but I want to try something different now and trying being at home a bit more.

"I think the professional ranks will suit me better as a fighter and that will probably be my next move."

Ham is the only member of the Scotland boxing squad from Glasgow.
