Lucas Browne survives severe cut to win Commonwealth belt

Australian heavyweight Lucas Browne survives a bad cut to stop Eric Martel Bahoeli inside five rounds to win the Commonwealth title in Sheffield.

Australian heavyweight Lucas Browne has won the Commonwealth title with a fifth-round stoppage of Eric Martel Bahoeli in Sheffield.

Browne, who fights under Ricky Hatton Promotions, displayed superb power throughout the bout, with the first knockdown coming in the second round.

However, a clash of heads in the third opened up a severe cut above Browne's left eye that required immediate inspection from the referee and fight doctor.

With the threat of the bout being called to an halt, Browne continued his onslaught against the Canadian, and after dropping Bahoeli in the fourth, a short right ended the contest in the following round to see the 35-year-old secure the vacant belt.

Browne stretches his record to 20 successive victories, 18 of which have come by knockout.
