Terry Flannigan edges Gary Sykes to win lightweight Prizefighter tournament

Terry Flannigan defeats three men in one night to win the lightweight Prizefighter tournament and pick up a cheque for £32,000.

Terry Flannigan edged out Gary Sykes to maintain his unbeaten record and claim the lightweight Prizefighter crown on a highly competitive night in Liverpool.

The 23-year-old got past Liam Patrick Walsh and Derry Matthews to make his way to the final.

An enticing semi-final clash with Matthews was marred by deep cuts to both of 'Dirty' Derry's eyes, allowing Flannigan to take full advantage for the biggest win of his career to date.

In a field featuring three former British champions, Sykes booked his final place with hard-fought victories over Tommy Coyle and former nemesis Anthony Crolla in a contentious semi-final decision.

Sykes and Flannigan were hard to separate in the final, matching each other for work-rate and accuracy, making it difficult for the judges at ringside to score.

A split decision verdict had onlookers guessing, but Flannigan got the nod on scorecards showing 28-29 29-28 29-28.

The Manchester native takes home a winner's purse of £32,000 and improves his unbeaten record to 18-0.
