Sha-carri Richardson marks her first appearance in a major final by winning the women's 100m at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Sha-Carri Richardson has upset the more established names in the field to win the women's 100m at the World Athletics Championships.

Despite her pedigree, the American was drawn in the outside lane having only scraped through to the final, but that mattered little as she stormed to gold in Budapest in 10.65 seconds.

The 23-year-old set a new personal best in overcoming her star-named competitors, with Shericka Jackson and Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce finishing in second and third for Jamaica.

However, there was disappointment for Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith as he came home in last place, clocking 11.00 seconds after only getting through to the final by a thousandth of a second.

Asher-Smith looked flat during the closing 50 metres of the semi-final and that was replicated in the final after she had initially looked in contention for a medal.

After the race, she told BBC Sport: "Towards the end of the semi-final I just couldn't feel my legs anymore, which was a bit strange.

"I don't want to make a huge deal because at the end of the day I crossed the line, felt fine, got on with it, made the final, and felt absolutely fine during the final. I felt great but a mad day, mad day."

In the men's 110m hurdles final which preceded the showpiece event for Monday, Grant Holloway won a third successive world title in a time of 12.96 seconds.

The American finished ahead of Jamaica's Hansle Parchment and USA's Daniel Roberts to strengthen his hold as one of the greatest ever to run this discipline.
