Great Britain claim silver in the mixed 4x400m relay at the World Athletics Championship after a dramatic fall from the Netherlands in the closing metres.

Great Britain have earned their first medal at the World Athletics Championships by claiming silver in the mixed 4x400m relay.

The quartet of Lewis Davey, Laviai Nielsen, Rio Mitcham and Yemi Mary John looked on course to earn bronze behind Netherlands and the USA.

However, Netherlands representative Femke Bol, who was running the final leg, stumbled and fell metres from the line, dropping the baton in the process.

USA ultimately came through to win in a world-record time of 3:08.80, with Great Britain setting a new national record of 3:11.06.

As a result of the Netherlands' disqualification, Great Britain were promoted to silver, with Czech Republic also setting a national record of 3:11.98 to claim the bronze.

Meanwhile, Katarina Johnson-Thompson has put herself in contention to win a medal in the heptathlon at the midway point of the multi-discipline event.

The 2019 world champion could only finish 10th fastest in the 100m hurdles, but she was joint-first in the high jump with an effort of 1.86m.

Later in the day, she posted 13.64m in the shot putt - the 13th-best attempt - but the 30-year-old dazzled in the 200m, coming home in a leading time of 23.48 to claw her way back into the event.

Nevertheless, she remains 93 points adrift of leader Anna Hall, while second-placed Johnson-Thompson is just 17 points ahead of fourth position.
