Great Britain's Sophie Hitchon takes hammer throw bronze

Sophie Hitchon has added to Great Britain's growing Rio 2016 medals tally with bronze in the women's hammer throw.

The 25-year-old claimed third place with a British-record throw of 74.54m on her final attempt, adding Olympic bronze to her previous World Junior Champion gold.

Having seen Germany's Betty Heidler and Moldova's Zalina Marghieva fail to improve their scores on the final run, Hitchon required 73.72m to secure bronze - a distance she surpassed to create more British history.

Hitchon becomes the first-ever Team GB competitor to win a medal at the quadrennial event, finishing behind China's Zhang Wenxiu and Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland.
