Great Britain's Jessica Ennis wins Olympic gold in the heptathlon at her home Games in London.

Jessica Ennis claimed Olympic gold in the heptathlon at the Olympic Games in London this evening.

Having gone into tonight's final 800m event with a lead of 188 points over her nearest rival Austra Skujyte, 26-year-old Ennis made sure that she secured top spot by setting a time of 2 minutes and eight seconds from her two laps of the track.

It all began yesterday for the Sheffield-born athlete, who set a personal best in the 100m hurdles.

She then proceeded to give steady performances in the high jump and shot put. That was followed by another personal best in the 200m as day one came to a close.

A jump of 6.48m in the long jump this morning tightened her grip on top spot, before another personal best was achieved in the javelin.

It ended tonight in the Olympic Stadium, with Ennis hitting the front of the field early in her 800m heat. Despite being overtaken with 200m remaining, Ennis responded with an acceleration down the home straight to take the victory.

She has ended the seven events with 6955 points, which is a British record. Germany's Lilli Schwarzkopf took the silver medal, while Russia's Tatyana Chernova claimed the bronze.
