Great Britain long-distance runner Jo Pavey has admitted that her participation in the women's 10,000m race at the European Championships four days ago affected her subsequent performance in the 5,000m event.
The 40-year-old, who won a gold medal in the 10,000m, was out of contention in today's race with around 200m to go and eventually finished seventh.
Pavey told BBC Sport: "I knew recovering from the 10,000m would be difficult but I gave it everything.
"To be honest I can't be more pleased to come away from these Championships with a gold. Thanks to everyone because it has been such a fantastic experience."
Sweden's Meraf Bahta won the 5,000m gold medal, with Sifan Hassan and Susan Kuijken of the Netherlands in second and third place respectively.
