Great Britain's Jo Pavey hails "funny" European gold medal win

Great Britain's Jo Pavey lightheartedly admits that claiming the European Championships 10,000m gold medal after "so many years" of trying is "funny".

Great Britain's Jo Pavey has expressed her joy at winning the 10,000m in the European Championships in Zurich, while also lightheartedly admitting that claiming a gold medal after "so many years" of trying is "funny".

The 40-year-old took the lead on the final lap, and despite Clemence Calvin's best efforts, the Brit crossed the line in 32:22.39 to become the oldest woman to ever win gold at the Championships.

Pavey told BBC Sport: "I can't believe it! I am just thrilled!

"I was feeling tired, but I had to try and keep relaxed and remind myself that everyone else might be feeling the pace. When I got to the home straight I just kept my eyes on the line and concentrated on giving it my all.

"To try for so many years and to finally do it at the age of 40 is funny really. I should have learned how it do it by now."

Pavey also won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games 5,000m race earlier this month.
