Mike Shanahan admits that Robert Griffin III will only be selected if he is at full fitness.

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has insisted that he will only play Robert Griffin III if he is "100%" fit.

Griffin has undergone reconstructive knee surgery since picking up an injury during the 2012 playoffs.

Shanahan admitted that it was perhaps the wrong decision to let him play on after starting to limp earlier in the match against the Atlanta Falcons.

"Every situation is different," Shanahan told ESPN. "Sometimes you make the right call, other times you don't, but at the end of the day you're always hoping that you learn from your mistakes, whatever they are.

"So at the end of this year, [as] we go into next year, one thing we're going to make sure of is that Robert never plays if he's not 100%."

Griffin was named offensive rookie of the year.
