Robert Griffin III cleared for week one return

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will be able to play in the opening game of the regular season.

Robert Griffin III has been given clearance by his surgeon to play in the opening game of the regular season.

The Washington Redskins quarterback has not played since tearing two knee ligaments during the playoffs in January.

Head coach Mike Shanahan told reporters: "I'll address this one right away. I did talk to Dr [James] Andrews, and Dr Andrews, after talking to him, he's going to approve Robert to play.

'There's a couple concerns [Andrews] has. I'll talk to Robert over the weekend and let you guys know on Monday."

The Redskins, who won all four of their pre-season games, play the Philadelphia Eagles on September 9.
