Jay Gruden: 'Robert Griffin III runs will be limited'

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden says that quarterback Robert Griffin III will have some designed run plays during the 2014 season.

Jay Gruden has said that Robert Griffin III will have a limited running role with the Washington Redskins during the 2014 NFL season.

The quarterback broke the record for most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback during the 2012 season, but suffered a knee ligament injury during a running play in the playoffs in January last year.

The team's head coach, who joined the NFC East side earlier this year, told NFL Network: "As far as him running in the pocket, quarterbacks make those decisions, not me. On game day, it's hard for me to tell them, 'Stay in the pocket, don't scramble!' But we'll have some designed plays where we get him outside, let him use his legs, obviously it would be stupid not to.

"I feel good where he's at. He made some serious strides just in the spring working in the pocket and delivering throws and pulling it down and running when he had to run. That comes naturally but also comes with a lot of reps and playing the position."

Griffin had 815 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 2012, but managed just 489 yards and no touchdowns last year.
