Robert Griffin III "work in progress" protecting himself

Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden insists that Robert Griffin III must do a better job of protecting himself during games.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has conceded that he is still a "work in progress" in terms of protecting himself better on the field.

The 24-year-old suffered a bruised thigh in a pre-season game against the Cleveland Browns on Monday night, and coach Jay Gruden insists that he must do a better job staying away from injury trouble.

"It's something we have to continue to talk to him about — how important he is to this team and this franchise. When he gets out of the pocket, he needs to protect himself," Gruden said, Pro Football Talk reports.

Gruden went on to stress the importance of having Griffin available across a 16-game season.
