Detroit Lions defensive coordinator warns that quarterbacks running the read-option offense in the NFL are at greater risk of injury.

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has said that quarterbacks who run the read-option offense will sustain more injuries.

The run-based offense has become more prominent in the NFL in recent years, with the emergence of mobile quarterbacks like Robert Griffin III, Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick.

Cunningham told the Lions' official website: "The problem is for those quarterbacks, one of these days, one of them is not going to walk off. It's a lot of pressure on him to physically do that.

"I think we all understand what the issues are and how to play it. I reflect back on my college days and it wasn't that hard to remember all that stuff because it put a lot of pressure on me in those days and it does in this league, too."

Griffin was named NFL offensive rookie of the season in 2012, having used the read-option to guide the Washington Redskins to the playoffs.
