Steven Jackson has signed a three-year contract worth $12m (£7.9m) with the Atlanta Falcons.
The running back voided the final year of his deal with the St Louis Rams earlier this month in search of work with another NFL team.
Rams owner Stan Kroenke said in a statement: "For nearly a decade, Steven Jackson served as an inspiration for his St Louis Rams teammates and our fans.
"Off the field, his generosity and unselfishness improved the lives of many families in the St Louis community. We will always be thankful for his contributions to our team and region and wish him success moving forward."
The 29-year-old has recorded over 10,000 rushing yards in his first nine seasons in the league.
