Pete Carroll: 'NFL has devised new signal for ineligibility'

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll reveals that the NFL have come up with a new signal for the Super Bowl to inform his side over ineligible players.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has revealed that the NFL has devised a new signal to inform his side over the ineligibility of players on offense in the Super Bowl.

The New England Patriots used a tactic in the divisional round of the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens where they fielded four offensive linemen and running back Shane Vereen reported as an ineligible receiver, which confused John Harbaugh's men.

However, the league has made steps to avoid confusion in the game for the Vince Lombardi trophy by displaying a new signal if Bill Belichick's men use the same system again.

"We made a call and asked about that. They came back with a very clear response," Carroll told reporters.

"They're going to have a new signal that designates when a player is, with an ineligible number, will be eligible - that's the same - but when an eligible number is now ineligible, they're going to make new a declaration to the players on the field, so that you'll clearly identify that.

"I know the league is absolutely committed to getting that right and doing that well. The Patriots have brought that to the forefront, because they've been using some stuff like that lately."

Seattle are looking to become the first team since the 2004 Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
