NFL ditch Roman numerals for 2016's Super Bowl 50

The NFL announces that the 2016 Super Bowl will not use Roman numerals in its official title.

The NFL has announced that the 2016 Super Bowl will be numbered 50, rather than 'L', in a change from their Roman numeral tradition.

It will be the first time in more than 40 years that Roman numerals won't be used for the season's finale, although the league did confirm that 2017's showpiece event will revert to type.

Roman numerals were first used for Super Bowl V, when the Baltimore Colts were victorious over the Dallas Cowboys in January 1971.

Super Bowl 50 will be played in the San Francisco 49ers' new Levi's Stadium.
