San Francisco 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald was arrested and charged with a domestic violence felony on Sunday.
Reports suggest the 29-year-old was involved in an altercation with his fiancee in the early hours of August 31, resulting in the police being called to the home and McDonald being taken into custody.
McDonald posted bail, was later released and has a court date set for September 15, according to CSN Bay Area.
The defensive tackle could be suspended by the NFL for six games due to the incident, in light of new rules governing the policy of personal conduct regarding domestic abuse.
49ers general manager Trent Baalke: "The 49ers organisation is aware of the recent reports regarding Ray McDonald and we take such matters seriously. As we continue to gather the facts, we will reserve further comment."
San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith was banned for nine games in the 2014 season for off-the-field incidents.
