Mike Tomlin has said that Geno Smith has done a "nice job" during his first five games in the NFL.
The New York Jets rookie quarterback, who was named the team's starter after Mark Sanchez injured his shoulder during pre-season, has helped the AFC East side to three wins so far this campaign.
The Pittsburgh Steelers head coach told the team's official website: "He's a very even-keeled personality type.
"That lends itself to being able to ride the roller coaster that can be that position, particularly at a young age.
"He has done a nice job of managing it. I'm not surprised by that, and I'm sure the Jets are excited about the direction in which he and they are going."
The Steelers, who sit at the bottom of the AFC North, face the Jets later today.
