Mike Tomlin "excited" by backfield progress

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin believes that the team's backfield players are showing progress ahead of the 2014 NFL season.

Mike Tomlin has admitted that he is "excited" by the progress that the Pittsburgh Steelers running backs have made during the off-season.

Le'Veon Bell is preparing for his second season with the team having been drafted by the AFC North side last year, while LeGarrette Blount signed during free agency and Dri Archer comes in as a rookie this year.

The head coach told NFL Total Access: "Le'Veon Bell has had a great off-season. He's really shown that he is excited about taking the next step in terms of work that he's done thus far, particularly from a conditioning standpoint.

"LeGarrette Blount has a definite football playing personality, one that not only is evident on the field but in the locker room. Think he's going to be positive to our efforts.

"I'm excited about letting these guys sort themselves out from a division of labour standpoint. I know that they're all committed to being a significant component to what we do."

Bell had 860 rushing yards and eight touchdowns for the Steelers in his rookie season, while Blount had 772 yards and seven touchdowns with the New England Patriots last year.
