Art Rooney II wants NFL to play matches in Mexico, Germany

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II admits that he would be disappointed if the NFL had not staged matches in Mexico and Germany by 2020.

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II has outlined his desire to see the International Series expand to have games staged in Mexico and Germany by 2020.

Three regular season matches are currently played in the United Kingdom at Wembley Stadium, but the popularity of the events has led the NFL to consider having further matches outside of the United States.

Rooney has confessed that he would be disappointed if the league had not staged matches in those two countries in five years' time.

He told the club's official website: "We would love to play another game in Mexico at some point, and so that part of taking NFL football to another country is something in which we have a keen interest.

"The Steelers are interested in the other international games as well, and so there's a lot of activity going on. There's a lot of interest in NFL football around the world, and we're just trying to keep developing that.

"If I had to put a timetable on it, I would be disappointed if we don't have games in those two countries within the next five years. The audience in those two countries - there are enough NFL fans in both to support a game."

The Steelers last played in the International Series in their defeat to the Minnesota Vikings at Wembley in the 2013 season.
