Mark Sanchez: 'I want to start'

New Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez admits that he wants to be the team's number one choice next season.

New Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez has admitted that he wants to be the number one choice for the team next season.

Sanchez was unveiled by the Eagles earlier today and is expected to compete with incumbent quarterback Nick Foles for the starting job in 2014.

Foles himself won the job following an injury to Michael Vick last season, and Sanchez believes that it will be a good thing for the team to have two players vying for one spot.

"I'm always going to want to start. It doesn't matter where you are, you want to play. There's nothing wrong with having that drive. I'll keep that fire going and try to help this team the best I can," Sanchez told reporters.

"I'm confident no matter who I'm competing against. Coming in here, I'm not stirring up a controversy. I'm here to help this team win, whatever that means. I really do respect Foles. I respect what he's done here, especially last year. He's a heck of a player, an incredible talent and I'm excited to work with him."

The 27-year-old former first-round Draft pick also revealed the reasons behind his decision to join the Eagles on a one-year contract worth at least $2.25m (£1.35m).

"I think it's the best fit. Offensively, it's the best fit, with the kind of leaders they have on this team. This is one of the most explosive teams you see around the league," he added.

"I feel like some of our best success where I've been was at a high tempo at a high level, whether late in the game or when we picked things up and started rolling in a two-minute fashion. It feels like that's kind of the norm around there. That's fun for me, fun for a quarterback."

Sanchez spent five seasons with the New York Jets before losing the starting job to Geno Smith last year.
