The New York Giants have announced the signing of defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul on a one-year deal.
Pierre-Paul was involved in an accident with fireworks in July and was forced to have a finger amputated, which immediately put his NFL career in doubt as a free agent.
The 26-year-old has not practised with the team since last season after missing the off-season programme in response to New York's decision not to hand him a long-term contract, but he returns to the franchise he has been with for all five years of his stay in the league.
"I'm very excited to be back," Pierre-Paul told the team's official website. "I'm getting ready to do what I have to do. I've been training down in South Florida with my trainer. Every day, I got up at 7.30am and lifted weights, I've been doing what I have to do to stay in football shape."
The Giants are believed to be hopeful that Pierre-Paul can return in late November.
