Reggie Wayne released by New England Patriots

Former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne has been released by the New England Patriots in a mutual decision.

Reggie Wayne has reached a 'mutual agreement' with the New England Patriots and has been released by the team.

The 34-year-old had signed with the reigning Super Bowl champions two weeks ago but, according to NBC Sports, Wayne asked for a release because the work environment was 'not fun.'

ESPN writer Adam Schefter reported on Twitter that the expectation around the NFL is that Wayne will now retire.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick told reporters: "Obviously, Reggie's time here was brief, but it only confirmed what I already thought -- he is a true professional who represents every positive attribute a player should emulate.

"Our parting was mutually agreed upon and I am personally grateful to have worked with one of the great NFL players of the past two decades."

The six-time Pro Bowler spent 13 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, winning Super Bowl XLI in 2007.
