Norv Turner has said that Brandon Weeden has worked "awfully hard" in the build-up to the 2013 NFL season.
The Cleveland Browns quarterback retained the starting role with the team for a second season.
The AFC North side's offensive coordinator told the team's official website: "He's worked awfully hard to absorb this system, to learn it, to work on the physical things that he needs to do better, and to be successful, we all have to do our jobs at a high level, starting with me, the people he's playing with, and then, he has to play at a high level.
"He has done everything we've asked him to do. I think he performed at a nice level in the pre-season. This is a totally different deal, and we, he, our offensive group is getting tested by an outstanding defense, a very physical defensive front.
"They have helped themselves in the secondary, so we're all going to have to do our jobs at a high level. I think Brandon's got the physical ability to play. I think he's done the things we've wanted him to do. He's made progress. Obviously, we want to see him go do it now."
The Browns open their 2013 season against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
