The Cleveland Browns have confirmed that Brian Hoyer will be the club's starting quarterback for the start for the 2014 season ahead of Johnny Manziel.
Hoyer joined the Browns in the 2013 season and played three games after dislodging Brandon Weeden as the club's signal caller, but was then ruled out of the campaign with an ACL tear.
Mike Pettine's side selected Manziel in the first round of the 2014 Draft to compete for the starting job, but Hoyer has won the battle during training camp to start ahead of the 21-year-old.
"He was the clear leader from the beginning," Pettine told the club's official website. "We've maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player.
"Brian has done a great job in the meeting rooms and with his teammates on the practice field and in the locker room.
"I think Brian's been very poised. I think he's handled the situation well. He's had a lot of things going on."
The Browns open their 2014 campaign against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7.
