Report: James O'Connor to join Toulon in summer

James O'Connor will reportedly join Toulon at the end of the season to effectively end his international career with Australia.

James O'Connor will reportedly join Heineken Cup holders Toulon at the end of the season and effectively bring an end to his Australia career.

The fly-half signed a short-term deal with Aviva Premiership side London Irish in October as he looked to escape off-field troubles in his home country and kick-start his career.

While the Exiles remain determined to do everything in their power to prolong O'Connor's stay in England, L'Equipe claims that Toulon head coach Bernard Laporte confirmed the 23-year-old will join the French outfit in the summer.

O'Connor is thought to have held talks with Toulon in November and is being touted as the replacement for Jonny Wilkinson, who is considering retirement at the end of the campaign.

O'Connor has made it clear that he wants to play again for Australia, but Wallabies boss Ewen McKenzie has said that he will adhere to strict selection laws by which qualified players overseas must be registered for the 2015 Super Rugby season by late 2014, and be back home in time to play the full campaign, if they are to be eligible for his Rugby World Cup consideration.
