Leeds have confirmed the appointment of Richard Agar as their new head coach.

The 47-year-old former Hull and Wakefield coach, who has been in temporary charge of the Rhinos since the sacking of Dave Furner in May, will take on the job on a permanent basis on a 12-month rolling contract.

Leeds director of rugby Kevin Sinfield told a press conference at Headingley: "We are delighted to be able to confirm Richard as our new head coach."

Agar returned to England last December following a spell with NRL side St George Illawarra to take up a newly-created role of head of player development department with Leeds.

He was then moved onto the coaching staff when assistant James Lowes left early in the season.

Agar, who has guided the Rhinos to seven wins from 14 matches to safeguard their Super League status, said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this group of players and helping them turn the corner this season.

"This is an outstanding club, both on and off the field, and it is our responsibility over the coming years to once again challenge for honours over a sustained period."

Sinfield said he spoke to other candidates before offering Agar the job.

"It was important we got right person for the job," the former Leeds captain said. "Richard knew throughout that process and that honesty has been really important.

"What stood out for me is that we've worked really well together. Even when you look at what's out there, he's the outstanding candidate.

"It's a big job, we all know that, and we're fortunate enough to acquire someone with so much experience."

Sinfield says he is still working on Agar's backroom staff.
